Re: oil pulling
. Well, there are actually links to several studies on there that DO show there are some health benefits. I don't think it is a cure all or a detox, but my mouth does feel clean afterwards and my teeth are whiter. Also, I had bad dental pain a couple of weeks after wisdom tooth surgery and after oil pulling twice a day for several days all the pain disappeared. Now, that isn't definitive proof as it could have just gone away on its own, but it is an interesting connection.

Re: oil pulling
I normally don't follow any sort of alternative healing methods but I decided to try oil pulling because I have horrible gums and gum pain. After a week of doing it my gum sensitivity when brushing was completely gone. Is it a miracle cure all? Probably not, but for ME I definitely see the benefits.

I wonder if that is just the moisturizing properties of the oil? Traditional mouthwashes are often alcohol based & that can be very drying.

Dr. Oz just did a demo of this one his show and he didnt use coconut oil. I forgot what oil it was but remember it wasnt coconut.
... which is why I don't trust Dr. Oz. Some of his stuff is OK, some of it is total garbage, and some of it is whoever paid him to endorse his stuff. Just like any other salesman.
If you can't fully trust someone shilling stuff on TV (and it didn't take much time to research the facts on this), how can you tell what else is true or not?
I trust him; not his show.

Please feel free to post links to credible sources that have actual research/studies about oil pulling. wellness mama.com, mercola.com and greensciencemed.com aren't credible. And while I can appreciate the anecdotal story about your experience with oil pulling, you would have had the same results with warm salt water rinses. I would encourage those with "bad gums" to go see their dentist/hygienists for a periodontal evaluation and adopt a better brushing and flossing routine. No amount of swishing oil is going to help resolve a periodontal issue.

It's quite possible! I had definitely considered that as the reason. I figure I have the oil here at home and it's not harming me, so why not.
And to the other poster... Thanks for the tip! As someone who has suffered from gum issues all her life it NEVER occurred to me to go to the dentist before now.
Look I said I saw results for myself. I didn't say it was a cure all or that everyone must do it so I don't know why there has to be snark.. I don't really need to see scientific proof of its benefits nor do I care enough to look up studies on it. I saw benefits on MY gums so I couldn't care less if it works for someone else.

. Like I said, it is just my story and certainly not definitive proof. For the record, I did warm water rinses and it did nothing. When I started the oil pulling, the pain went away. I also used coconut oil which has anti microbial, anti bacteria properties, which might have had something to do with it. Again, I've had positive results. I can't speak for others.

Dr. Oz is a cardiothoracic surgeon. What the hell does he know about oral health and hygiene? It's like asking a neurosurgeon to remove a plantar wart on your big toe. If I have to hear one more of my mommy friends say they are following the Dr. Oz plan for immunizations, I'm going to biff them just because they are stupid. IT'S NOT HIS FIELD OF MEDICINE!!! Okay, rant over. Sorry to hijack.
This oil pulling sounds interesting actually. Maybe I'll try it.

Re: oil pulling
I have done it for a week and the plaque on my teeth (which is killing my gums and making me lose teeth!!!) is significantly better.
If only I knew about this years ago

You think I don't do my research???? LOL FYI salt water didn't work for me. I still lost a tooth because of tartar damage. Even after flossing, brushing, regular dental visits, I keep experiencing he build up. It is simply no longer there now that I've started oil swishing.llll and that is after a week!!!!
