OK - I'm no Kelly Pickler, Anyone up for another ???.... SCROLL to bottom
Someone please explain this to me - I am studying to take this exam and this was one of the practice questions....
Together, a pen and pencil cost $2.59.
The pen cost $1.79 more than the pencil.
What was the cost of the pencil?
......So they give you only formulas in the multiple choice.
The correct formula is the following:
2.59 = X + (X+ 1.79)
But why? I don't understand.....
Can someone please help me????

Re: OK - I'm no Kelly Pickler, but I need help with this math problem!!!!
The pencil costs X
The pen is $1.79 more than the pencil, so X+$1.79
So pencil + (pen) = 2.59 or X+(x+1.79)=2.59

The pencil is X because you know the pen costs 1.79 more than the pencil. Therefore, the pen is x (the pencil) plus 1.79. And you know the total price is 2.59 so think of it as the pencil + the pen (pencil + 1.79) = 2.59.
I think I got that right?!?

2.59 = X + (X+ 1.79) is the answer because:
2.59 is the total of the two items = the X represents the price of the pencil + (the x represents the price of the pencil added to the 1.79 equals the price of the pen). Since it said more than the pencil, it means that you have to add 1.79 to the price of the pencil to get the price of the pen.

Re: OK - I'm no Kelly Pickler, but I need help with this math problem!!!!
X is going to equal the cost of the pencil so the formula would read: The total cost ($2.59)= the pencil cost (X) + the pen cost (which is the pencil cost(X) + $1.79)
I hope that makes sense!!

Re: OK - I'm no Kelly Pickler, but I need help with this math problem!!!!
The pen costs $1.79 more than the pencil. You don't know what the pencil costs, so you call the pencil x.
Then pen costs pencil + $1.79 or x = $1.79.
So, pencil = X pen = x + $1.79
Together, the pen and pencil = $2.59
$2.59 = pencil + pen
Plug in your values for pen and pencil and you get
$2.59 = x + (x + $1.79)
Make sense?

I stink at explaining things but X represents the cost of the pencil. You know the pen cost 1.79 more then the pencil (X) and that the two items cost 2.59.
cost of pencil (X) plus cost of pen (X+1.79) equals 2.59
I don't know if that helps.

If you need any more help, just FM me with questions. I am very good in math especially this kind. I used to tutor math.

Take it a step at a time. If numbers aren't your thing, you should write it out in words first like I tried to do and then "plug in" the x and number values.
So write out:
Pencil = X (b/c it's an unknown) Pen = Pencil + $1.79 Pen = X + $1.79
$2.49 = Pencil + Pen
$2.49 = X + Pen
$2.49 = X + (X + $1.79)
If it helps you to know where the parentheses go, put every "item" in its own set. Since Pencil is just x (and not a formula), it doesn't need parentheses, though you could put them in if you wanted to.

Re: OK - I'm no Kelly Pickler, but I need help with ANOTHER math problem!!!! SCROLL to bottom...
Matt earned the following in 6 weekly tests:
91 89 82 95 86 79
He was hoping to earn an average of 90 which would have him get an A-
How many more total percentage points should Matt have earned over the course of 6 weeks to qualify for the A-?
I want to see if you guys get it before I give you the answer....

18 more percentage points because to get a 90 average he would had to have gotten a total test score of 540 and 540/6=90 average.

WHY?????? Because the 3 points times by the total amount of tests he took (6) is 18.

O.K. I am a complete and total dumba$$ when it comes to math, but, I never understood why this needs to be so complicated. If a pen and a pencil cost $2.59 and the pen is $1.79, why can't you just subtract the cost of the pen from the total cost? Wouldn't that be easier? I know that's not how they teach math anymore, but, it just makes more sense to me. No matter how you figure it out, the cost of the pencil is still going to be $.80 so you can get the total of $2.59. Guess I'm just "old school" and showing my age. Unless I'm just completely missing something which would just prove why I am a complete and total dumba$$ in math.

Ok, I got 18 the 2nd time.
if you add up his scores & divided by 6, to get an average, it is 87, which is 3 points away from 90. But in order to have an average of 3 more percetage points overr the course of 6 weeks, he would have had to have gotten 3 per week (or equivalent) so, you multiply 3 x 6.

Yes because he would of needed 3 more points to have a 90 average so in order for him to get that you have to times the 3 by how many tests he had taken (6).

The cost of pen is $1.79 more then the cost of the pencil so it is really the cost of the pencil + an additional $1.79.
