O.K. I am a complete and total dumba$$ when it comes to math, but, I never understood why this needs to be so complicated. If a pen and a pencil cost $2.59 and the pen is $1.79, why can't you just subtract the cost of the pen from the total cost? Wouldn't that be easier? I know that's not how they teach math anymore, but, it just makes more sense to me. No matter how you figure it out, the cost of the pencil is still going to be $.80 so you can get the total of $2.59. Guess I'm just "old school" and showing my age. Unless I'm just completely missing something which would just prove why I am a complete and total dumba$$ in math.
Because the pen is not $1.79 The pen is $1.79 more than the pencil.

18?
Yes because he would of needed 3 more points to have a 90 average so in order for him to get that you have to times the 3 by how many tests he had taken (6). OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!
I actually GET that!!!!!!
He needed 3 more points tagged onto each exam!!!!!!!!!!
Thats right!

Re: OK - I'm no Kelly Pickler, but I need help with ANOTHER math problem!!!! SCROLL to bottom...
OK - heres another - now DH got this one wrong - he is a project manager for construction and has to deal with things like this everyday....
Ms. Williams plans on buying carpeting for her living room floor
The room is a rectangle measuirng 14 ft by 20 ft
She wants no carpet seams on her floor, even if that means that some carpeting will go to waste
The carpeting she wants comes in 16 ft wide rollls
What is the minimum amount of carpeting that will have to be wasted?
Here are your choices:
40 Sq Ft
60 Sq Ft
80 SQ Ft
100 SQ Ft
Tell me first, and then I'll tell you what the answer is....

I want to say 40 ft waste since you will need a piece of carpeting that is 20x16 to fit the room and the room is 20x14 so you will have a 20x2 piece left over which is 40 square feet. Is that right?

80 - he said 4 ft would be left over after putting it down.... so multiplued that times 20 - not sure why - but his daughter also was helping, and she is the one who has been cutting math everyday, so....

Told you I was a complete and total dumba$$ when it comes to math. It just seems more complicated than it has to be. Anyone who can do this and do it well deserves

The average speed of a plane was 600 KM per hour. How long did it take the plane to travel 120 km?

Choices:
.2 hrs .5 hrs .7 hrs 5 hrs
.2
Another way to think of it, ( with less actual math) since it is multiple choice, is that if it went 600 KMin 1 hour, it would go 300 in half an hour (.5), and 150 in a quarter of an hour (.25).
You want 120, which is a little less than 150, so, the answer is .2, which is a little less than .25

you are right - I actually found a place where the explain the answers, so you could do:
120/600 = 1/5
to travel 120 km, you need 1/5 of an hour, or .2 hrs...
