OK, I need to know if anyone else feels this way, nursing related

Even before I was pg, but moreso now, I have big time reservations about nursing.

I just cannot come to grips with having a child sucking on my body, although I am well aware of the amazing benefits that come from it.

I am totally uncomfortable with even thinking about it and wonder if anyone else feels this way or if I am just a weirdo.

Although I don't feel the same way as you, there have been many posts from people who do feel the same....do what makes you comfortable!

I have never nursed..nor do I plan to now. Selfish as it may sound I just want my body back. I have difficult pregnancies and by the time I give birth IM DONE...Im a good mom and my children are happy, healthy, well adjusted children.

Nursing is not for everyone. Dont feel guilty about it....different things work for different people.

I will probably BF BUT i know exactly how you feel. There is a part of me that just doesn't feel comfortable with it. I was also considering just pumping and feeding the baby with a bottle, instead of right from me. In the end, l MAY try to breastfeed, but the concept needs some getting used to.

I don't think you are a weirdo. You have to do what makes YOU comfortable. I don't plan on BF either for some of the same reasons you have as well as others. Chat Icon

Yes, I had/have hang-ups about a child sucking away as well. It's odd in a sense, I was breastfed and I used to pretend to breastfeed my dolls.

I don't expect anyone to "get" it or understand it...even DH thought I was being selfish until he thought about it a little more. Besides, when would I get a break if I breastfed? I need to be able to walk away sometimes and not be a mom for a few hours (especially with a 6 year old who needs/wants special attention from me as well). I made a choice that was right for me and has proven to be right for my kids.

Re: OK, I need to know if anyone else feels this way, nursing related

I TOTALLY understand how you feel. I have waxed and waned with this decision myself. I have always had body image issues, and the thought of a child sucking from me, ugh I just don't think I can do it. Which is strange since all my sil have BF, and so has my mom. But it's me and my hang ups. I feel tremendous guilt because i know it is whats best for the baby. But I will tsill be a good mom, and along with my pediatrician, give him the best diet possible. SO I am right with you.Chat Icon

I didn't BF with my son and don't plan on it with this baby. I am not comfy with it and I understand how you feel. Do what works for you either way.

I understand how you feel, but would urge you to try to get past your discomfort to at least give it a try. It really offers amazing health benefits for both the baby and for you...

Re: OK, I need to know if anyone else feels this way, nursing related

there is nothing wrong with feeling that way. I tried BF with DD and she was so lazy and I didn't want to make it a fight to get her to do so....I pumped for 6 weeks and it wasn't exclusive.

She is a formula baby....and at 17 months old....has only been sick with a stomach virus. She is thriving.....

YOU must do what you feel is right for your baby AND you....if you're unhappy, your baby will know it and respond accordingly.

I am on the fence about this subject. I definitely want to "breastfeed"- but am not sure if I want this baby to be sucking on my boob all the time. I am really really considering just pumping and bottle feeding her.

I feel the same way. I personally feel weird about it. I did give it a try though and he didn't latch so then I pumped and had to stop.

For the next ones I will not even try. Formula is just fine thanksChat Icon

me too me too!

But I'm going to try it anyway...ONLY because I've heard of lots of women feeling the same way and totally overcoming it once they tried.

I'm really hoping it works for me.

I would love to try to get past it, and TRUST me, I know the advantages of it, I did extensive research in college.

However, I cannot change the way my brain acts, or will react, and I can't even say that I'll feel differently when the baby is born. I have every intention of trying, I just need to be in the moment to see I guess.

Re: OK, I need to know if anyone else feels this way, nursing related

I feel the same way. I struggled with the decision for a while, as I want to do what is best for my baby. But seeing that DH and I were not breastfed, and we turned out okay, I'm comforted. I decided for me (for a variety of reasons) it isn't the right choice.

But I totally agree that it is a personal desicion and each of us has to do what we feel most comfortable with and what we feel is best for us, our babies and our situations.

Re: OK, I need to know if anyone else feels this way, nursing related

I BF DS and plan to do it again, but like a PP mentioned it's a choice! It's a very personal decision that you make about your body. I think it's better when the mother is happy, she will pass on so many good feelings than if she is miserable and that could outweigh any benefits to breastmilk.

And I know a few BF kids that have "special needs" as well, so the coin can flip both ways.

PLEASE!!!!!! Don't feel pressured into it either. And don't let the hospital pressure you either.

I had outside pressure and hospital pressure and it made me sooo miserable.

If you don't want to do it, you don't want to do it. Bottom lineChat Icon

Re: OK, I need to know if anyone else feels this way, nursing related

I am not PG, but I had to respond to this post. As someone who plans to be TTC shortly, and despite whatever else, thinks about being prego a lot-- I think about BF too.

I am totally weirded out by it as well-- I know it's so healthy and all the benefits.. but something about it-- I just cannot get passed the idea of the baby sucking on my boob. I don't get offended by it, but something about it just makes me uncomfortable-- as natural as it is. It just makes me feel funny. Actually, it makes me feel better that other people think this way-- I am not a weirdo!

As other girls posted-- the calorie burning benefits will be enough for me to try it. Also-- I plan on going back to work, and definitely do not want to be a slave to my breast milk.

I felt that way before I had my oldest. I think it was because I thought you'd actually feel every time they s*ck on the nipple. When I realized you don't even feel it after the first few times I got over it.
