Ok, question...would this bother you?

Ok, so I was at MIL's house on Saturday. She goes into the spare bedroom and pulls out this white communion dress that is big enough to fit her. Then she tells me that she bought it for JT's niece, who is making communion next spring, and she's so excited that she has this dress. Well, I said to her, "That's WAY too big for her, that's a 12 and she's only a size 4!" And her response was, "Who cares, I love it, and there are ties in the back, so we'll just tie it."
So then I asked if JT's sister and niece have even seen it, and she said, "No. I bought this and this is what she's wearing."
Meanwhile, my niece was SO excited about being able to pick out her dress, and now she can't. And I'm sure my SIL is not going to say anything to my MIL because she's too scared to.
I know it has nothing to do with me, but it just annoyed me that not only is the kid getting gyped out of picking her communion dress, but it's going to fall off her little body. Chat Icon

Re: Ok, question...would this bother you?

Yes, it would bother me too - What if your SIL was looking forward to going shopping with her daughter and pick out the dress?
What if your SIL and neice don't like the dress?

Some mother-in-laws should mind their own business. She needs to be put in her place.
Its one thing to buy stuff for your grandchildren - but to buy something a year before the actual date and expect the little girl to like it and wear it for her special occasin is wrong.

That's so stupid!

When I taught 3rd grade in catholic school, I used to prepare my kids for their 1st communion. I can remember all the little girls telling me how they loved picking out their dresses.

She IS going to feel gipped out of picking out her dress and it will result in a miserable day....or at least until she takes off the dress.

Re: Ok, question...would this bother you?

Ok, I'm glad I'm not crazy for being annoyed by this.
My poor SIL is so ruled by her mother that she will NEVER tell her no. Luckily, my niece is outspoken enough to tell my MIL she doesn't like it.
I know my niece is looking forward to picking her dress because it's ALL she can talk about!Chat Icon

Re: Ok, question...would this bother you?

I would not have my daughter wear it. First of all, she'll look like a clown because it's so big, and next...if it was so important for my daughter to take part in shopping for her dress, I'd let her.

Re: Ok, question...would this bother you?

that would piss me off....the girls like to pick their own dress at that age
and it was a really fun experience that I had with my daughter ...trying on tiaras and dresses now your SIL wont have that chance

she should say something

If I was SIL I would just lie and say, "Oh, we already bought one! I so wish you had told us you would be buying one before we went shopping..."

Re: Ok, question...would this bother you?

It would completely bother me. That poor kid. What makes your mil think that it is OK:
1) to pick out the dress with out consulting any one else.
2) to choose a dress that is 10 sizes to big
3) to NOT see that she has major controll issuesChat Icon

That would really irritate me and I would probably let my daughter pick out her own dress anyway. That's really overstepping on your MILs part.

Wow, how obnoxious of your MIL! This would absolutely bother me. I hope your SIL decides that it's time to say something to her mother.

Yes that would make me mad.

Sounds like what I went through when my mom bought my baby's going home outfit. Ummm I already bought one and I am using what I bought. She was more than offended. In her mind it's tradition but obviously a tradition no one I know has ever heard of.

Maybe your niece will say something to grandma since she was excited to pick out her own dress.

Re: Ok, question...would this bother you?

Does your SIL know she bought it or was going to buy it? Is it possible that she does know and is making a special thing about it coming from gramdma and all that?
On another note, if I were in her shoes, I'd be ******!! My mom is always doing stuff like that to my sister and all I say is, thankfully it is her and not me because I would never put up with that. My sister doesn't know how to say no to my mom!

Re: Ok, question...would this bother you?

Ok, a little update on the situation. I was at SIL's house tonight, and I didn't mention the dress situation, but she brought it up and said that she is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO ****** about her mother buying her daughter a dress. SIL told me my niece already picked one out that she loves, but they were waiting until they got closer to the time to order it, but that if she says anything to her mother, she'll just FLIP OUT (which I can vouch is true). My poor niece. The only cute thing is that when my niece finally saw the dress my MIL bought her, she thought she looked like I did on my wedding day, and that made her happyChat Icon So cute. God help my MIL if she ever does this to me and my children!
