OK, so here's my new plan of attack for defeating the swaddle.....
Gavin threw a small hissy last night.... Went to sleep great w/o swaddle, but woke around 9-9:30 and freaked....
Must Have Swaddle!
So I was thinking that we can keep putting him to sleep w/o it and when/IF he freaks, we will then swaddle him... In hopes that he will eventually just not want it.
Wishful thinking? Crazy? Stupid?
Can't decide or we can swaddle till he's 27......

We transitioned our DD from the Miracle blanket at 4 months right to the Sleepsak & had no issues...its worth a try...or at least start him in that & if he wakes/has a feet, then swaddle?

DS was sort of hooked on the swaddle at one point, plus he kept rubbing his eyes and flailing his arms around, so it helped him relax.
We started doing exactly what you suggested, and now we very rarely use it. When he's rubbing his eyes like a maniac, we hold his arms down for a couple minutes. Usually he calms down and forgets to do it when we let go.

Gina,
How about swaddling him until he breaks out of it? I think thats their way of saying "Ok, I've had enough"...

I was going to say the same thing. Most babies eventually break out and wean themselves from the swaddle.
He's not going to go to college needing to be swaddled
As far as answering your question...I think that's a good idea. However, if he does not wake in the night now, why create that habit? But, you never know until you try. I would see what happens after 3 nights. And, if you are going to swaddle him anyway after he wakes up, then it kind of seems pointless to not swaddle him from the beginning. Unless you are ready to not swaddle him at all even if he wakes up.

he already does, it's like a game for him. Some days I find him with one leg out , 2 legs out, and his hands always in his mouth....and he laughs when I look at him!

OMGGGGGGG ROTF!!!!!!!! That is the cutest thing I've ever seen! He is such a cute chunk!!!
Have you tried the Miracle Blanket though? its like a baby straight jacket...works better wrestling those chunks down. Thats what I had to use on DS when he was around 1.5 months.

Re: OK, so here's my new plan of attack for defeating the swaddle.....
I hear ya....
I think you just gotta try whatever and keep at it.
Our DS is telling us loud and clear at 3am he doesn't like the swaddle. So we took him out. WOULD NOT SLEEP AT ALL.
And i am not sure what the hell the sleep sack is supposed to do but it does NOTHING for our DS. I might as well have him in just Pj's.
So we are trying to get him out slowly now. One arm one week. No swaddle for naps. And now 2 arms this weekend. We were supposed to do it last weekend but he got sick and needed it to sleep for a good amount of time
ARRRRRRRRRRRRRGHHHHH...
I always thought the swaddling was the THING to do. Now i wish i never did it at all

We swaddled DD till she was nearly 5 months (with the Miracle Blanket). She transitioned to the Sleep Sack without any problems!

Re: OK, so here's my new plan of attack for defeating the swaddle.....
Gina, what happened with us is that DS actually started waking up MORE in the middle of the night trying to bust out of it, so I finally decided to stop using it because I was getting up too much to re-swaddle him.
I started by swaddling him with one or both arms out during naps, full swaddle at night, then leaving the arms out at night, then no swaddle for naps, then no swaddle for night.
I had to go back a few times when he has had rough nights, but so far we haven't been using it much. Also, I find DS sleeps better when he has a sleeper on with long sleeves and pants - I think when he has skin exposed, it's weird for him. So even though the house is sometimes warm enough for short sleeves in a sleep sack, he doesn't seem to be able to sleep like that.
HTH - good luck
