This is very disturbing...we still have a few weeks so lets dig some more and see what we come up with. I also got the Avent and Dr. Brown's bottles...Im not going to return them just yet...lets see what happens.

ETA: I also got some Medela bottes for my shower so I guess I'll be using those...

The bottles have NOT been recalled, baby bargins just changed their opinion on them b/c the bottle companies won't stop using the BPA.

BUT that doesn't equal a recall

Chat Icon That's enough for me.

I'll be registering for Born Free. They come in both plastic (BPA free) and glass. The glass are too heavy for me so I'm going to go for the plastic.

They haven't been recalled, it is just disturbing news. I have read though that there is only slight evidence based on research with mice. I just don't know if it is worth the risk. If I had a pediatrician already I would ask.

I decided that I am not going to get rid of my Avent bottles...but I am going to get the Born Free set since they're glass and BPA free and you can't go wrong with that.

Re: okay...i'm freaked out about this bottle recall

I honestly don't know what to do. The evidence is weak - and millions (if not billions) of babies were brought up on plastic bottles.

I find it odd that I haven't really seen any of this on the news, yet the lead paint recall is EVERYWHERE!

I plan on BF'ing, but I will have to pump when I go back to work - so I am going to need bottles.

Re: okay...i'm freaked out about this bottle recall

I think this all needs to be put into perspective. Simliar to what we have been dealing with during our pregnancies regarding what we can/cannot eat, drink, do. MOST of what we hear is based upon opinion...a group or groups opposed to a specific industry, etc. It is the same thing with the bottles. You are getting bombarded with information about how unsafe the bottles are from a group that is at odds with the industry. If you google the topic, you will see article after article... some pro and some con. You need to remember that as fabulous as the internet is, anyone can post anything! You need to do your own research and get your information from RELIABLE sources... websites that end in .gov for example.

I posted last night that I find it VERY hard to belive that if this was such a big problem and was causing harm to children that bpa would have been banned or the bottles would have been recalled already... just my opinion...

I love my Baby Bargains as much as the next preggo... but that doesn't mean that I have to take everything they say as gospel. I can take their recommendations as a starting point and go from there.

Sorry this is so long... and maybe preachy... I just think that sometimes pregnant women/mothers are easy targets for things like this because we are so worried about everything!

Very well said. But . . . because it will take years or study to find out how much of a health hazard this truly is, why take a chance IF you don't have to. It reminds me of the car seat thing with Consumer Reports. Yes, their testing was inaccurate for 35 MPH, but it was right on for 70MPH. Don't you want the carseat that protects the baby at the Jersey Turnpike speed limit?

Let's face it, the gov't says growth hormones etc in chicken and beef are fine and there are no adverse effects. If that is true, why are babies being born over 10 pounds to mothers without GD?? 20 years ago that was unheard of, and now most MD's don't even blink at a baby that large.

Just because there is no substantial research to support a conclusion doesn't mean there won't be in 10 years. For my child, that will be too late.

ETA - I realize this might be a little dramatic - but the gov't said the blood supply was safe in the 1980's when the AIDS crisis started. It took more than 5 years and more than 100,000 deaths for the blood supply to be tested, so I'm not so confident that the gov't would step in and ban bottles with BPA without tons more research. Like I said - at that point it would be too late for my child if I didn't heed the warning now.

Re: okay...i'm freaked out about this bottle recall

I bought the glass bottles from evenflo. They are a little hard to find but they are cheap and don't have BPA. They Playtex drop ins also don't have BPA and alot of parents like those bottles. The born free don't have the BPA either but they are pricey. However if you have any other bottles like AVENT etc I think it said you are fine as long as you don't heat up the milk in the bottle past a certain temperature.

By no means do I think that we should ignore these things. I just think we need to remember not to panic every time a "report" comes out and to remember to consider the sources that put out the reports.

It makes me feel badly to see women like us panic over things like this. I've seen posts about this bottle issue on so many boards and the women (including myself) are so confused and frustrated! You can even see the effects on this board. The recommendation from Baby Bargains was already mistaken for a recall. No matter what the issue... we need to be smart and do our homework!!! I learned a long time ago... "consider the source".

Chat Icon wow! I am just unsure what to do!

On one hand, millions of babies grew up on plastic bottles healthy... yet, there have been so many instances - like accessive drinking, smoking - and other things that women used to do (and some had healthy babies) yet we know that its not healthy, and increases risks that we should not increase.

It takes A LOT of our gov't to move, so I wouldn't be surprised if in few years they recalled the bottles. So, its one of those things, that I is a small risk, but how do we know how small? how significant? and if it does/or does not increase risks that we shouldn't increase... Im stumped!Chat Icon

I am going to use the Playtex Drop-ins and the born free bottles. I am going to try both and see which ones work best.

Here is link from Baby Bargains of BPA free botles.

http://www.windsorpeak.com/babybargains/BPAFREEbottles.html

Here is a link of an article I found:

http://honolulu.craigslist.org/oah/bab/398811509.html

On a previous bottle post someone also said they did research and found out the following:

Posted by grouchyladybug:

http://www.lifamilies.com/chat/topic-189332-1.html

After I read the article, I did some online searching and found other articles about the "study" that was done. The Department of toxicology has a report out that states that the bottles are safe. Something about the study being done on 600 mice and only 11 were effected. Also the experiment could not be replicated for some reason.

I mean at this point there is research on both sides. The research on the side that BPA is bad for babies has yet to convince the Department of Toxicology to recall bottles made with BPA. I would rather err on the side of caution and use BPA free bottles.

There were big babies being born to non GD moms 20 years ago as well. You can't blame it on chicken. Pregnant women also take better care of themselves. Look at the list of things we can and can't eat. Most people take prenatal vitamins throughout their pregnancy and even before. 30 years ago people still smoked while pregnant.

Has anyone done a survey to establish if the the drop in are really safer. You are still using a plastic bag.

You are absolutely right about the panic. There is NO need to panic - only a need to do more research and educate oneself and then make a decision. My point was really for those that haven't purchased bottles yet, or were confused about what they should use can just completely avoid the situation at the onset, rather than wondering if they should throw out what they have, or be concerned that they are somehow causing "harm" to their baby.

Me too I just returned all my Dr Browns today to BRU. Here is a helpful link. I am going to order the Sassy Mam bottles they are not too expensive.

This is a great article. Thanks for sharing it. After reading it I think I am going to try the Born Free and maybe the Medela bottles. Since I am going to use a Medela pump these bottles will probably work well to pump into. I think I have reconsidered using the Playtex drop-ins. According to this article the Playtex drop-ins are not unsafe, but borderline. I still have to do some more research before I make my final decision.

Thanks again for sharing this article.

I was trying to decide between the Born Free and the Sassy Mam's and I think I am going to go w/ the Born Free plastic. I have credit to BBB so I will get them this week.

I think the reason the drop-ins are considered borderline is because the bottle is not BPA free but it doesn't matter since the formula doesn't actually touch the bottle just the liner.

I just did a bunch of research about plastic bottles. There is a lot of interesting stuff out there. The drop-ins are made from polyethylene (PET) which may leak DEHA, a known carcinogen, if used more than once. I guess since you only use a drop-in once then it would be safe. Below is one link where I found this information, but there were other articles that also had this information

I just went to bru to buy my twins new bottles..my opinion is this...
they are now used to that particular nipple.
If u guys can get the ones that are safe do it..why take a chance?
I had to get the nuby bottles and put the Dr brown nipples for them.
I do not boil my bottles so supposedly I am safe..but like someone pointed out..I wash for two--so sometimes I put them in the dishwasher so I didn't know how safe that was. I just think if God forbid u can avoid it then do it.
The nuby bottles have a colic free system too so I would suggest that--or the born free--or whatever the name is.
Personally..I dk why they use that chemical anyhow.
