Old High chair question?
Hi, my MIL insists on using DH and his sister's high chair from when they were a baby when DD comes to visit. Right now she's 3 months but soon in the next few months to come she'll be transistioning into using a high chair when she comes to visit grandma. Is this safe to use? The chair is over 33 years old. I'm a little concerned about its safety quality.
I know some books say to not use old cribs, but what's the specs on older high chairs?
TIA!

Re: Old High chair question?
I would not use one that old they have changed a lot of the safety standards since then. If you are worried about it you could do two things - buy an inexpensive one and leave it there or get one of those like the FP spacesaver high chair which reclines and is like a regular HC but it attaches to a seat so it is easy to throw in your car when you take your DC over there.
Here is a pic:

Ok thanks - I will look into it. I just hope I don't hurt her feelings. Ugh.

Re: Old High chair question?
Many older pieces of furniture had lead paint in them, plus the safety features have changed drastically in 30+ years. I would just try to explain your concerns about safety, and emphasize that for DC's safety, you aren't comfortable using the chair. Hopefully, if you focus on the safety, she'll let it go....

Re: Old High chair question?
MIL wanted to do the same thing but luckily she ended up buying a new one...
...but I think it would have been fine, I mean she did raise DH in it...and I knew she wouldn't have taken her eye off of DS while he was in it. I'm sure its not up to today's safety standards!!

Re: Old High chair question?
what kind of shape is it in? does it have straps or a bar to keep the baby from slipping out? Take a look at it and just use common sense. DD sits in a highchair that must be 60 years old when i go to my nanas and its totally fine.

Re: Old High chair question?
My DD uses my old highchair..it's almost 32 years old.
I don't let her use the tray though since it's painted..i pull it right up to the table.
My old highchair converts from a highchair to a see saw to a kiddie desk. My GIRLS LOVE IT! Saves me a ton of schlepping stuff to grandmas.

Re: Old High chair question?
ILs have my niece's high chair which is almost 18 years old and when DS started going in a high chair we would use that. Now that he sits at the table, we brought a booster seat for their house.

Take a look at it and just use common sense. this is my approach to this kind of stuff.
i used to make myself crazy worrying about what is and what isn't considered safe, then one day just took a step back and started to use my head...
