Re: Older kids and strollers
I have seen this PLENTY and there is nothing wrong with them but most likely laziness on their part or the parents. At 6 or 7 a stroller is ridiculous and some look ridiculous.

Re: Older kids and strollers
Speaking from the perspective of someone who works in the autism field, you never know whats going on. I know teenagers who still carry around Barney dolls, you know? Its sad... NOT that that cannot be addressed, but it takes commitment from the parents, and sometimes thats not eve the priority - some parents just want to go to the mall, a restaraunt, etc, and not have a meltdown, so they let them have the toy, sippy cup, pacifier, stroller, etc if it will buy them a few hours of peace...
That being said, yes, there are many neurotypical children who do still use strollers, sippy cups, pacis, etc, and I personally don't think its right, but once again, it works for the family for whatever reasons...

Re: Older kids and strollers
I said that I could not tell from just looking, but it seemed like the kids were healthy, just lazy.
My parents would never had pushed me around in a stroller when I was 5 or 6. And the mall was packed so it made it harder to get around.
If they were disabled in any way, I take back what I said, but it didn't seem like they had any disabilities.

Re: Older kids and strollers
I wouldn't put my 6 or 4 year old in a stroller for a visit to a mall. BUT when we're in Manhattan for the weekend, DH & I still argue that I bring a double stroller for them. We walk around the city all day - from Bryant Park to Central Park. He will b1tch that they shouldn't be in stroller but if we didn't have it, he'd be carrying one & I'd be carrying the other.
I also agree with the posters that you never know how old a child is by looking at them. My friend has had many snotty comments by complete strangers about how she is babying her son - who was only 15 month old. He was extremely tall & learned to talk early. I still can't get over the audacity of strangers.

Re: Older kids and strollers
I would never make comments to the parents. It's not my place and I know that.
I'm just looking to see if I'm the only one that notices things like this.

I grew up in manhattan - my mom gave up my stroller when I was 2!!!!!! She had me walking all over manhattan with my little legs - I still remember being tired!

Oh ok. Yes. I definitely notice things like that. I think the pacifier in public is the one thing that irks me.

Re: Older kids and strollers
Ok, it's funny that you post this because I was looking at Ava today and thinking, "Wow, she's really tall and looks like she's at least two already (she's not, she's 20 months), and she already looks too big for a stroller!" Barring no physical issues that would require a child to sit and not walk, I say 4 is my maximum with the occassional exception for a 5 year old on a long day in Disney or something.

Thats the thing. These kids were in umbrella strollers where it looked like the backing was going to rip off any second.
I think younger kids who look older are different altoghether.
