My reasons for delay only involve the autism link in small part.
Its the reports of permemant deafness, severe infection, gastro issues, Febrile seizures and allerigc reactions leading to mental impairment that makes me want to delay.
Those reactions are scientifically PROVEN to be a result of the MMR.
Like I said in the other posts, I think anyone who is going to have an opinion should do their research.
I haven't seen those scientific proofs, but I'm not going to argue that they are or aren't true.
That has to be weighed against official stats from the World Health Organization:
http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs286/en/
# Measles remains a leading cause of death among young children, despite the availability of a safe and effective vaccine for the past 40 years. # In 2006, it was estimated that there were 242,000 measles deaths globally: this translates to about 663 deaths every day or 27 deaths every hour.
As a parent, we are constantly battling within ourselves as to what is best for DC, and we always assume (hope) that what we decide is the right decision, no matter what it is.

One BIG reason not to delay the MMR.
I know people are going to start getting nutty and bring up about how some people delay vaccines, yada, yada...even if children are vaccinated, they are still suseptible to diseases. Besides the fact, vaccines eventually wear off which is why they say that most ADULTS should get re-vaccinated at a certain point but we don't. Who's to say an adult didnt give it to the infant?
people jump to conclusions so quickly...the fact is we dont know who the child is or who gave it to her.
This may come off snotty and I don't mean it that way but how can anyone say don't jump to conclusions about this but it's okay to delay the vaccine based on no scientific evidence? That is a much bigger leap IMO.
I respect everyone's right to do what they feel is in the best interest of their family. However, every time an article comes out that suggests vaccines cause autism (usually written by Jenny Mccarthy, no less), people jump up and say "see, I am so glad I didn't get my kid vaccinated". In this case, people are saying "see, I am so glad I did get my kid vaccinated". How is is different? We all want validation that the choices we are making for our kids is the right one because deep down no one knows 100%. This is no different. It's just the other side of the coin.

Thanks sweetie-but I've done my research and am comfortable (as comfortable as one can be) with the choices we have made.

I think we went to RF instead of the source on Thursday - thank god - DD is too young to get the shot. But the measles scare me - my grandfather became permanently deaf from them when he was 3 - This is a issue whenever you fly you never know when you board a plane or go to any public place for that matter (but a plane is a small enclosed place) who has what.

would you mind posting your sources for this info? i've done a fair amount of research in the medical literature and i've found no convincing evidence about any of these effects except for febrile seizures within 2 weeks of vaccination.
i want to make sure i'm not missing anything. TIA!

Measles, Mumps OR Rubella CAN KILL. We KNOW this.
Alex gets all of her vaccines.
So does my dog.
DH called me about this today - he was afraid we had been there since we were supposed to start Gymboree classes. The child was in Fortunoff, Children's Place or Carters, Gap and Gymboree Outlet I heard...

The Dept of Health said you'd have to be in those stores or areas within 3 hrs of the baby being there to be possibilty exposed.
I hate the fact that we brought our 10 mth old there 2 days later but they say it was really that evening that was an issue. I just worry others were exposed and now contagious there (employees, etc)

That's what I was thinking also. We went shopping there Saturday afternoon. Although the people who work in the mall most if not all had the MMR vaccine at some point...the vaccine does wear off overtime but they say an adults immune system is usually able to fight it off.

everyone is entitled to a opinion...i do not get why is assumed this is what happens when people delay vaccinations.. I am sure more then 1/2 the adults on here are not utd with their vacciations..they were off..yes... this is why..vaccinated kids can get whopping cough..this is why a family member of mine caught it from a doctor and so on... not everyone delays because their kids might have autism...some of us have other family members that are sick, or know people who cannot come into contact with a live vaccine and so on... sometimes this is like beating a dead horse. its not one persons way or no way..it is not a one size fits all...it shoudll be modified to the kid, their family and so on. I do not get it why sometimes people can not see both sides. If you do not agree fine.. but do not assume things.

I repect other people's decision to do what they want with their own children.
However, IF your child doesn't get Hep B, or MMR, or whatever...and then they DO wind up getting it and have been in class with MY child, yes I could get very upset. KWIM?
It's the same with my dog - he gets all of his shots. If he goes to the dog park and gets exposed to kennel cough because someone decided their dog didn't need it, I would be pretty upset...because they have put others at risk.

for sure! I understand. Truth is though. .my kids cannot be in your class with your kids if they do not have their shots so it wouldn't be a issue. At least I think u have to be vaccinated to be in school with other kids, I give them..--I do it on a different schedule. If I had them in daycare I couldn't do that.
Its also the same as if I sent my kids healthy..and a mom sent her kid sick and knew it..which happens alot..I would be infuriated. I am saying family history plays a factor--sitautions and all that and its not one size fits all... and how can we assume this came from someone delaying? this could have been a child exposed to adult where the shot no longer is effective is all.

no--all kids going to public school or private or daycare need shots as far as I know..unless reglious excemption, which is not too easy I think. I think religous excemption is only easier if u never gave a shot.

i want to make sure i'm not missing anything. TIA!
Here is a link to the CDC's MMR vaccine information sheet. They list the following side effects:
Mild Problems Fever (up to 1 person out of 6) Mild rash (about 1 person out of 20) Swelling of glands in the cheeks or neck (rare) If these problems occur, it is usually within 7-12 days after the shot. They occur less often after the second dose.
Moderate Problems Seizure (jerking or staring) caused by fever (about 1 out of 3,000 doses) Temporary pain and stiffness in the joints, mostly in teenage or adult women (up to 1 out of 4) Temporary low platelet count, which can cause a bleeding disorder (about 1 out of 30,000 doses)
Severe Problems (Very Rare) Serious allergic reaction (less than 1 out of a million doses) Several other severe problems have been known to occur after a child gets MMR vaccine. But this happens so rarely, experts cannot be sure whether they are caused by the vaccine or not. These include: Deafness Long-term seizures, coma, or lowered consciousness Permanent brain damage
So there are some risks, as with any vaccine, drug, or anything we do in life. However, measles can cause deafness, seizures, brain damage and death. Mumps can cause deafness, meningitis, and death. And Rubella can cause miscarriage or birth defects in pregnant women.
The gastro issues have not been proven, there is this Dr. AJ Wakefield who has a theory that the vaccine causes live virus to attack the intestines, which leads to uptake of toxic neuropeptides that could damage the brain and causes autism. But he never proved that the intestine damage occurred before the vaccine was given, and did not show that there was any virus in the intestine. Plus his study was on only 12 autistic children, who were referred to his gastroenterolgoy clinic, so who knows if what happened to them is typical for most autistic children. Plus most of his co-authors later retracted their support for the paper. Here is the Wikipedia page devoted to him, I know not the greatest reference but most of the journal articles don't have free public access.
We as parents have to measure the risks and make as informed a decision as possible, and then just stick with that decision. I followed my ped's vaccine schedule, but I will not fault other moms for splitting or delaying vaccines for their children. I just would like for parents to be as informed as possible and not get their information solely form the media (not that I think any moms on here are doing that but I do worry that it happens). I think maybe pediatricians need to step up and give parents more information, since most moms do not have access to the research articles on these vaccines.

Yes this is true. Private and public even nursery schools require this too if you dont bring the forms in they will kick your kid out of school because it could put other children at risk.
The people at risk here with this outbreak are the auto immune comprised (certain diseases, HIV, Lupus etc) pregnant woman and children of course. Hopefully most adults have had the shot so the employees hopefully would not be carriers.

You can claim "religious exemption" on immunizations and your kids CAN attend. I hear it's pretty difficult though. It was talked about on here previously that some parents would opt to go that way, even though their religion didn't prohibit immunizations.

The other concern now is going out to busy public places where you can always pick up a cold or flu but b/c you don't know who was "exposed" and could be carrying the measles but hasn't shown any symptoms yet and could easily pass it on. I think that is what the concern now is.
