OMG Snake- in my HOUSE!!!!! Help!!!!!
There was a snake in our basement, maybe 5-6 inches long i think, brown. What the HE-LLLLLL?!?!?!??!
What do we do?
We were downstairs a few months ago and we found what looked to be a small snake in the corner of a closet. It was dead. We thought, one time thing, no biggie. Must be a fluke, etc.
But this is the 2nd time. Downstairs is not damp, has light, furniture. It's a lived in space.
We've lived in this house 1.5 yrs and since then had termites ($1000+ to terminex and then carpenter ants, more $$), now this. Please, how many bugs/invaders can a home have?
Really though, what the F do we do? I have no idea. I can't ignore it, it's the 2nd time.

Re: OMG Snake- in my HOUSE!!!!! Help!!!!!
Take a picture so we can see what kind of snake.
If it is harmless, maybe your DH can capture it in a pillowcase (that youdon't mind then throwing away ) and release it far from your house.

Re: OMG Snake- in my HOUSE!!!!! Help!!!!!
It's dead. A family member lives downstairs and killed it.
But, since it's the 2nd time, makes me think this is a problem. Never had i heard of 2 snakes in someone's house.
Family member is freaking out as am I. I have a baby.
Can you spray for snakes? Like you do for bugs?
Anyone know where i can find info?

Re: OMG Snake- in my HOUSE!!!!! Help!!!!!
I hate snacks and have a weird fear of snakes getting in the house. I was called weirdopants on FHF for this fear
I would call an exterminator and have them look into the issue. I just cannot imagine
I live in NC and a gecko got into our house once. I almost died. Dh chased the thing around the family room while I stood on a table clutching DD.

If there is a pinhole of light coming through from a window, door, crack, whatever they will get in. Especially that it's colder now. Seal everything, never leave doors open without screens, check your screens (make sure they are tight).
We've had one in the house. this is what our exterminator told us to do. Also crush up moth balls around the border of your house.

i get frogs! at night they like to sit on our front door and when we open the door they fall in then we have to catch and release them - i'm afraid my dog will get sick if she eats one - which she totally would
snakes are scary - my mom gets them in her yard a lot - even in the pool sometimes and from what i hear FL is notorious for them.
where do you live? are you in the south or in LI?
i would call an exterminator i guess and see what they say. they might point you in the right direction. maybe there is a hole somewhere? or the condition around your house is the kind snakes like to live in? like their preferable habitat? (i think they like tall grass?)

It prob just a garden snake. They are harmless. I would just catch it and release it. I don't know it bothers me that they killed it but that's just me.

Re: OMG Snake- in my HOUSE!!!!! Help!!!!!
Thanks everyone. I live on the South Shore of Nassau. I called every place i could think of starting with the town of hempstead animal shelter who then told me to call the dept of health. I googled wildlife control places, called them too. Basically while everyone sympathized, they said there is nothing to do. Just to make sure that every single possible hole is sealed (like a PP said )
I won't lie, I'm worried, but I'm using lots of denial to get me through

Re: OMG Snake- in my HOUSE!!!!! Help!!!!!
I think it's awful to kill a snake and I'm sad to hear that they killed it.
You can always have someone catch & release it, which is what I hope you or anyone else does next time.
It could have been someone's pet and it got into your home, too.......

Re: OMG Snake- in my HOUSE!!!!! Help!!!!!
OMG! This is crazy. I used to work for an exterminator on LI and people have called before for them. However, we couldn't help. Most exterminators don't treat or trap for that. I would def. plug up all the cracks and crevices.
Google snake control, NY and see what comes up.
Good luck!!!

Honestly, if I walk into my living room and see something slithering on my wall, I'm not going to stop to think about what to do next. I'm going to kill it. Yes I feel bad for the snake but I'd feel worse if I had to worry that it was in my house and could possibly hurt my child.
ETA: I'm not heartless and will hit the brakes hard if i see a bird or squirrel in my way, but a snake in my house, the rules change.

I don't think you need to explain yourself. I would have killed it too. Who knows...it could have harmed your family.

Re: OMG Snake- in my HOUSE!!!!! Help!!!!!
We used to have two snakes -- a boa and a python. We donated them to a reptile sanctuary once they reached a size where I felt it wasn't appropriate to keep them in a residential home. They have a great habitat to live in now at the reptile museum. Anywho, those snakes CAN be dangerous depending on the size and they can def bite -- although it isn't likely, there's a chance. I mean, who knows what kind of snake it was -- could have been dangerous (not from around here, got here somehow, maybe even poisonous) or it could have just been a regular water or garden snake which don't even have like, real teeth and that ability to harm anyone - they are also rather small. The odds are that it was just a garden snake rather than something really dangerous but unless you know about snakes you can't know that for sure. I understand you were scared -- it's normal and I think before I met DH who owned two and we actually had two for several years I probably would have felt the same way. I think because it is getting chilly out all sorts of creatures are looking to get to a warmer place. That's probably what lured him -- just make sure you get any and all holes or "ways in" taken care of so you don't have to kill anymore snakes and deal with the fear of it all too! GL.

OMG i would have dropped a freakin' bomb on it if that's what it took to get rid of it. HELLLLL NO am i trying to catch and release it. EFFF that. Don't explain yourself. The last thing i care about is the well being of a snake that somehow found it's way into my house... especially when i have a 14 month old running around that same house.
