Beth, if they had to enter the lobby to go through your mail, do you suspect anyone who lives in the house?
Especially if they tried to copy your signature. How would they know what your signature looked like in the first place....unless it's the same person who stole your rent check.....
I think that would bother me MORE than if just a nobody-off-the-street kind of person took it.

I doubt it was someone who lives in the house
the lobby is open
there are only 3 other apartments- and we know everyone
I think it's the person that stole our rent check
we also had a package stolen back in January
our mail has also been a mess recently- everyone's would be in one pile on the table
I am so freaked out still!

Could you ask your landlord about installing a security camera in the lobby?? Or heck, even just putting up a sign saying there is a security camera?

she is in greece for the summer
but at least putting up a sign and maybe a fake camera is a great idea

it was for the boby shop for the repairs on my car
i am so freaked out now
I am going to put a fraud alert on my accounts
and change my checking account number - b/c this all started with a lost rent check!
(I used to leave my landlord a check in my mail box- she never got the May check- I had to stop payment on it)
I am freaking out now
This was common in the area where I lived in California. When I worked for the PO we use to have cars follow us and take the mail out of the Mail Boxes after we delivered it. Mostly in the rural areas.
