I used to work at a pediatrician's office and a woman who brought her children there had lost her husband. She had 3 boys and 1 girl, all under the age of 7. My heart broke for them and I think about them every year. I always watch the names being read and wait for his name.

Re: On September 11th, I remember....
Hearing reports that a 'small plane' may have 'accidentally' crashed into the twin towers. Being glued to my computer and radio at work. The entire office at my desk since my colleague and i were the only ones with internet access in the law office. Frantically trying to call everyone I knew. Half the phone lines not working. Leaving work at 11am. Stopping on Ocean Parkway and watching the smoke burning off Manhattan. Feeling my legs buckle underneath me. Crying in my car because I felt so helpless and lost and not able to drive another centimeter. My mother's relieved face when she saw me. Grabbing my 6 month old son and holding him and thinking I was never going to let him go.
Chris.

Re: On September 11th, I remember....
I remember thinking it was a bad dream, this cant be real... Ths twin towers always had a special place in my heart..
All these innocent, hardworking people. So soo soo many people...
We lost a childhood friend, whose wife had just given birth 5weeks prior.
At his memorial service, (dont rememberif it was a few months later) his dad said he still held his cell phone every day, hoping it would ring, maybe just maybe. ring phone ring.
I remember we were at a pizzeria with our cousins. we just had to be together with close family that day, and their 5yr old saw all the news on TV and just thought "WOW LOOK AT THAT!" when he saw the planes, of course had no idea what was going on.
Then at the pizzeria, he saw it again on TV and goes "Dad, theyre watching the same show that you just had on at home"
OF course I remember every day, the many wives, husbands, children, grandparents, neighbors, friends, who lost a mom, dad, brother, sister, grandparent, best friend.. someone special.
God Bless everyone that was lost that day. God Bless all the heroes that went to the rescue, those that made it out, and those that didnt
God Bless America.

Re: On September 11th, I remember....
this immense feeling of sadness, dread and helplessness.
I can only hope and pray our future generations never experience such a dreadful day.
I was home that summer/fall unemployed. Dh (who was my BF at the time) was working on my parent's house so I was up early watching good morning america when everything happened. It was such a surreal experience. Almost like watching a movie. For the first few minutes I really couldn't wrap my brain around what was happening.
Then the skies fell silent as any and all commerical planes flying overhead were grounded. Then the fighter jets flew over the house, coming out from the base out east.
I frantically tried to get in touch with my brother, SIL and Aunt. My aunt worked downtown on Wall St. at the time. I remember crying on the phone with each of them telling them to stay safe and do whatever they had to do to get the hell out of there. My aunt walked from Wall Street to 48th street to meet my brother who then, together walked to meet my SIL at the 59th Street bridge and walk over into Queens.
Unfortunately, my bother's office faced downtown and he witnessed the planes hitting the building. One of them came in from behind his buiding. He says it is an image he will NEVER forget for as long as he lives.
Thank God no one in my immediate or extended family was hurt or killed that day. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for my dear friend.
I mourn for she and her family today and always. It was truly heartbreaking to see her get married last year and be walked down the aisle by her mom and brother (also an active member of the FDNY) instead of her dad. To have a "mother/daughter dance" instead of a "father/daughter dance".
Have they been able to move on? Somewhat. But there will forever be a gaping hole in their hearts and mine forever.
This is what I remember.

I will never forget watching the TV and seeing the towers fall--when it happened and the dust cleared and suddenly the tower was gone--and coming to the realization that the whole thing collapsed--I will never forget that.
