One nap at 13 months? Esp daycare moms

Ryan's schedule is 2 naps a day - usually 1.5 hrs 9/9:30AM and again around 2:30/3PM.

I just started bringing him back to daycare last week and this morning the teacher told me, "I know you just started bringing him back, so you don't know this, but in this room we're weaning to one nap a day". I explained Ryan is not ready for this. I assumed this happens when he does it - not forced. Who would promote a single nap during the day (that's cleaning time Chat Icon )!

How does your daycare do this? I assumed around 18 months Ryan would do this on his own, I didn't expect a daycare to tell me they wean them into this.

She was fine when I told him I wanted him to get the 2 naps, but thought I'd ask here.

DD started 1 nap at daycare at about 14 months. She does get a 20 minute catnap in the car as well both ways.

She does well with one nap. Makes her go down easier at night!Chat Icon

My problem is I need Ryan's bedtime to stay at 8:30PM or I won't see him at all during the work week (and right now he has no problems with bedtime - I literally put him in and he rolls over and goes to sleep).

I don't think he can last getting up at 7/7:30AM ish til 8:30PM at night with only one nap.

My DS is 14 mths and he kind of weaned himself to 1 nap a day. He naps from 11:30 to 1pm. They also started taking him out in the am and pm so it worked out.

During the weekends, I do notice he gets a bit cranky around 4pm but I think it just due to lack of stuff to do at home.....and him just being bored with DH and me. Sometimes, I will put him down for 1/2 an hour. It helps.

DS was in daycare at that age and he most definitely only took 1 nap per day, sorryChat Icon

Re: One nap at 13 months? Esp daycare moms

The one nap a day at my daycare starts when they go into the toddler room. The infant rooms had no set nap time - they took naps when they were needed, usually twice a day. She moved into the toddler room around 15 months.

DD naps once a day and it's between 2 and 3 hours. When she's at home we try to force 2. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

DD isn't in daycare either, but DD transitioned to 1 nap I think around 15 or 16 months.

At our daycare as soon as they go to the "First Steps" room (room between infant and toddler) they drop to 1 nap. DS went at around 14 months and that is when we dropped the second nap.

How long are his current naps? A longer nap midday may work. My DS was napping 2x a day for 45-60 minutes and went to 1x a day to 90 munutes. DS goes to sleep at 8pm and it seems like he able to tolerate it.

Usually 1.5 hrs each at home or in-laws. Daycare naps are shorter (but he needs to adjust to being there). He did an hour in the morning and 45-minutes in the afternoon the 2 days he was there last week.

Well, I'm going to be honest and say that even at 2, sometimes Christopher takes 2 naps a day, but in daycare, he only took one. And he went to bed earlier.

But with our schedules, DS stays up a little later (9:30pm) and still wakes pretty early, so that is why we sometimes get 2 naps still.

But when we get 1, it is long, like almost 3 hours usuallyChat Icon

My DS just started at a new daycare. They don't stop them from taking 2 naps, they just don't force/encourage it. Maybe if he is misses his morning nap he'll sleep longer in the afternoon?

I actually love the one nap a day because it's a nice long one. When he was taking two naps I found that they were shorter...now it's a nice long stretch (for both him and ME!) Chat Icon

DS is not in daycare now, but I visited some a few months ago, and they all told me one nap for children his age (he was about 14 months then). Not a problem for him since he went down to one nap around 10-11 months on his own.

I would say, see how it goes initially and talk to the daycare if it really isn't working out. Maybe he can take one short one later in the day?

DD transitioned to the "wobbler" room (12-18mos) at 12 months and they do 1 nap from 12-3. She made the transition really well. She will still do 2 1.5 hr naps at home (9am and 1:30pm) but will sleep 2-3 hours at daycare. Everyone there reassured me that she would do well, and she did.

Athan has been doing 1 nap a day since 12.5-13 months. Day care does only 1 nap as well - 12:30-2:00 I believe - so it won't be a problem for him (I hope). Bedtime is still 8:30 pm.

Re: One nap at 13 months? Esp daycare moms

Not a DC mom but DS went down to 1 nap on his own around 15 months. And it had no effect on his bedtime.
He had a similar schedule to Ryan in that he would take 2 1.5 hour naps generally around 10am and 3ish and then bedtime was at 9.

Now we do 1 nap around 1:30ish and he goes to bed around 8:45ish.

Not a DC mom here either but my DD didn't transition to one nap until she was 2. We had a schedule similar to yours:

up at 9
nap 10:30 - 12 sometimes 12:30
Next nap around 3/3:30
Bed around 9

We did it this way so that DH would be able to spend time with her after dinner. Knowing her personality, I couldn't imagine if she had gone to one nap earlier - I think that she would have been a monster!

I would try it and see how it goes - he might surprise you, and every kid is different!

DD is almost 13 months. Her daycare still puts her down for 2 naps. When she is home on the weekends, she rarely gets 2 naps. I can only get her down for the AM one and that is usually 2-3 hours.

I am not sure what the nap schedule is like when she moves up to the next room, that will be in September.

Same, just the 1 nap per day. And to be honest, he rarely had a sleep...

This is awful to me - Colin's daycare does is the same thing. He is still a full-on two nap a day kid (even after having been in the next room for 2 months) which means my 1 hour at night with him is disastrous. He's literally EXHAUSTED. And on Wed and Sat, when we're home, he sleeps half the days away trying to catch up Chat Icon I hate it and I cannot wait until he's out of daycare b/c of it.

I know - I told DH he'll start one nap when I'm on maternity leave and bedtime can be turned back a bit Chat Icon

DS actually transitioned himself to one nap per day at 10 months. But he kept his bedtime the same time. Worked for me because his two naps per day were only 20 minutes each. Now he naps for 2 hours.

Re: One nap at 13 months? Esp daycare moms

We went along with the daycare schedule, as they too have a rule, that its one nap a day once they move your child into the toddler room. However, we were informed before hand when we signed DS up that this would be the case. We were therefore prepared for it. Surprisingly it only took about a week or so for DS to transition from 2 naps to 1. He used to take a morning 10:30-12 and then a 3-4 nap everyday.

Since the transition he now takes one big nap from about 11-2, which is FABULOUS for Mommy on the weekend, it gives me sucha big block of time to get stuff done around the house.

As for the bedtime thing, I feel your pain as we arent home until 6ish, and DS goes to bed at about 8-8:15, which was his bedtime when he was still taking 2 naps. I didnt find that the one large nap affected his bedtime and I hope its the same for you when you finally transition.
