Only 18% of Employers Offer Full Paid Maternity Leave!

This is such depressing news! Why are so many employers allowed to get away with this?

We get 0 paid maternity leave and depend on the generosity of our employers.

In other countries in Europe, you get 16 weeks to a full year of paid maternity leave! Even Iran and Iraq has 90 days and 62 days respectively!

18% Offer Full Pay

Is anyone else outraged by this?

Re: Only 18% of Employers Offer Full Paid Maternity Leave!

I didn't know this until it affected me. I took maternity leave and was not paid. I used my sick days and "borrowed" sick days from the bank, so that my medical insurance would be covered by the district for 3 weeks. Now, I am on maternity leave and not earning a salary and have to pay 1300 dollars a month to keep my medical insurance while I am home. I am a teacher. Being that we spend our lives educating and nurturing other people's children, you'd think we'd be compensated when we need a little time to do this for our own children!

As a teacher we were allowed 8 weeks paid, but we had to use them from our sick days.
I took off 12 weeks and was not paid that last month but still had my benefits.
After 12 weeks FMLA I had to pay for my benefits which is why I went back to work.
I couldnt afford to NOT get paid and pay $1100 a month for benefitsChat Icon

I think it is disgusting, but I'm actually surprised it is 18%. I would have thought it'd be much lower. I know my company isn't in that 18%. Chat Icon

and mine isnt one of them...LOL
I got top NYS maternity short term leave equalling 180/week for 6 weeks.
I stayed out 10...I felt I deserved it.
I guess next time you have to remember to trip on a wire at work so you can actually get paid disability...its more then maternity leave...how pathetic!

Wow I did not know that, that is terrible, it shows how much we value the family in this country.

I can't complain though my company paid me my full salary for 3 1/2 months during my maternity leave, and just this week agreed to shorter work days for me during our busiest time.

i think it's disgusting. i work for a european bank so i get 16 weeks full pay (i believe my european counterparts get even more). DS is 6 weeks today and my mom said to me, imagine having to go back to work tomorrow? so many people have to do that. that really hit home how terrible maternity leave in this country is Chat Icon

Re: Only 18% of Employers Offer Full Paid Maternity Leave!

my job is AMAZING in this respect. I got 8 weeks paid through a private disability company...the first 4 weeks were at 100%, the next 4 were at 80%. After that, my company paid me an additional 4 weeks at full pay and then I took 2 weeks off w/o pay

So in all, I got 8 weeks at 100%, 4 weeks at 80% and 2 weeks unpaid....I am very lucky

My company offers 13 weeks ful pay. I was out a total of 4 months combined with some of my own vacations days.
The offer nursing rooms fully equipped and a backup in-house daycare.

My company is awesome!

Re: Only 18% of Employers Offer Full Paid Maternity Leave!

Thank goodness my company gives 12 (well, actually 14 or 16) paid weeks off. We get 6 or 8 from STD, then the firm has a 6 week policy, plus you can take 2 weeks vacation.

I know I am one of the lucky ones. But isn't it sad when we think that 16 weeks off is GOOD compared to what other countries get?

If you're eligible for FMLA, your employer is required to maintain your health insurance benefits for the 12 weeks of leave. You are required to continue paying any premiums that you had been paying for insurance. If you take additional leave, unfortunately you can then be required to pay the full cost of insurance.

Maternity leave is terrible in the US.

Isn't it terrible?

I can't imagine how any employer think it's responsible to allow that. If we had more female executives or politicians fighting for us, perhaps things may turn around...

But I think until we have a social health care system like some of the european countries do this is going to be the norm. s*cks

My district only allows 6 weeks paid, and that's IF you have enough vacation time banked. I actually had to borrow, so I owe my district vacation days that they will take back over the next 4 years.

Out of pocket benefits are outrageous! I was quoted $2k+ for a family plan! Luckily we were able to switch to DH's.

Re: Only 18% of Employers Offer Full Paid Maternity Leave!

it's awful - and the maternity leave that we do get is the result of so much effort of so many women fighting for their rights.

When my mom had me, her hospital stay wasnt covered by health insurance - and I was born by natural childbirth.
