Is maternity leave usually paid?

I was just looking at my personnel guidelines for my new job and I think it says unpaid.... I could be reading it wrong- or is this normal?

Re: Is maternity leave usually paid?

Mine is unpaid - other than the little amount under NYS disability (170.00 per week before taxes!). From what I have been reading here, most are unpaid leaves.

Re: Is maternity leave usually paid?

I get paid through disability for my maternity leave. I get 2 weeks prior to birth and 6 weeks after birth maternity leave through disability. Then my company pays me an additional 4 weeks after disability ends.....My job has GREAT benefits....Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

The first 4 weeks of disability are paid out at 100% of my salary, the next 4 are paid out as 80%

Is that how it works for everyone or does that vary by company?

Re: Is maternity leave usually paid?

Wow, I thought maternity leave was always paid...

I am lucky, my company pays 4 months of maternity leave, 85% of my monthly salary.......

I guess I am staying put....

I am new- I only get 2 weeks, I think 6 sick days and 2 personal days. Even if I waited a little longer I don't think that I can carry over any unused days. I need to look into all of this!!

Re: Is maternity leave usually paid?

Depends on your company policy. Mine is unpaid and we are not even guaranteed our jobs back after 6 weeks. If your company is less than 50 employees then you do not fall under the FMLA Act and they are not obligated to pay you for your leave.

Re: Is maternity leave usually paid?

The US has the WORST maternity policies in the World. If you get any pay during maternity (other than the big $170 the state pays you for 6 weeks) you are very lucky. BEFORE TTC purchase short term disability insurance!! They will give you a % of your paycheck while you are out, especially if you need to go on bed-rest or be in the hospital during your pregnancy. Also, make sure you have long-term disability insurance with your company in case you need to be out for more than 12 weeks because of medical need pre or post delivery.

I have short term disability with my company and they paid 80% of your salary per week with a max. payment of $1K per week ( so not really 80% of everyone's salary but much better than than the $170 NYS sends you).

Re: Is maternity leave usually paid?

I get 12 weeks FMLA, 6 weeks of that is paid as disability at 100% of my salary. The remaining 6 weeks is unpaid.

I'm "lucky" in that my boss is also going on maternity leave and they asked me to log on a few hours a week from home to help out throughout my leave. They offered to extend it 2 weeks and pay me full salary for 9 weeks and 60% salary for the 5 weeks.

This is through short term disability, I am not sure if it varies, I think it is a state thing, not a company thing but I am not positive.

Re: Is maternity leave usually paid?

Every company is different. I get 6 weeks full pay for a natural birth and 8 for a c-section. Then I can choose to take more unpaid leave, but only for a total of 12 weeks. If I do need to be out for longer than 6-8 weeks for medical reasons, I need doctor verification and I get paid, but they start decreasing my salary 5% for every two extra weeks I'm out. But, I'm not garuanteed my job back if I have to go out for more than the FMLA 12 weeks.

Disability is a state thing. I believe Stephanie is in North Carolina? In NY it is different.

I will get what NYS disability offers as well as my vacation time, which will amount to about 4 extra weeks. I actually take that on the end of the 8 weeks from disability.

Re: Is maternity leave usually paid?

My leave is unpaid, I'll get 6 weeks for vaginal, 8 weeks for c-section. I'm not covered under FMLA bc I will be 4 weeks shy of the 1yr requirement to hold your job. Unfortunately Illinois doesn't offer any disability.

My manager is letting me work from home for an additional 6 weeks after my unpaid leave is over.

Re: Is maternity leave usually paid?

I am getting 12 weeks in all. I get 6 weeks paid, as sick days ,and the other 6 unpaid. If I have a c-section I get 8 weeks.

Re: Is maternity leave usually paid?

Where I work I get to use all of my sick days (getting paid for those) and then once I run out, I'm unpaid until I come back. I should have 7-8 weeks worth of sick days by the time I deliver.
