Open Enrollment - Changing coverage for TTC???

DH and I have open enrollment in Nov for our benefits... I currently have my own health insurance through my job and he has his own through his job. I was just looking through his package and his company has this amazing infertility coverage, $35,000 a year! I don't think my company has anything, or if we do I don't see it listed anywhere. We are going to start TTC in 2007 so I was thinking we might need this (I have no reason to think we are infertile, except that I have been on the pill for years and am worried, so I would like to be prepared).

Does anyone know if the infertility coverage a company provides is seperate from health insurance?
Or will I have to enroll in his health insurance plan?
Or if it is seperate from the health insurance, if I am the one with an issue should it be covered?

I asked DH to look into this, but he thinks I am being negative... so hopefully someone on here might be able to provide some insight

You will have to be on his plan if you need treatment

so if there are a couple of health insurance plans to choose from, it doesn't matter which one I pick?

The infertility coverage is listed in a seperate section than the health insurance.

Ahhhh, his company may have a separate rider for IF...wow, that is a huge perk.

Where is Dm4angel? This is her forte...

Nevermind my last question... I was just reading through it again and it say on the bottom: "This applies to all 4 national plans." So, yes, I do have to sign up for one of their health plans but it can be any one.

Sorry for all the silly questions... this is new to me and DH thinks I am being a worry-wart so he is no help.

I'd switch if I were in your shoes, but mostly because I have some factors that may lead to infertility issues (age, for one thing). If I were younger, I'd wait and see, maybe switch next year.

Re: Open Enrollment - Changing coverage for TTC???

I am starting a new job soon and i was thinking about checking out the same thing. Both DH and I will be using my insurance. I am trying to get the company to send me the benefits information but they need to wait until they do all my pre employment stuff first.

Many of us have been on BCPs for a long time - myself, 15 years. My doctor told me that my being on birth control for that amount of years would not have any effect on my ability to conceive. Believe me when I tell you I asked him about one trillion times before he and DH told me "enough already." I think there are some ladies here with recent BFPs who were on the pill for a long period of time too.

If you find out that your current provider does not have the infertility coverage that would make you feel better, then by all means switch. I asked women in my agency who used fertility treatments of many kinds what our insurance covered. I am fortunate in that it covers more than I thought it would. Hopefully, we won't need it.

I can't help with the insurance end - but I have PCOS and I was on BCP for 10 years and went off a year ago - I was concerned about the BCP and the PCOS - and with great luck we hit it our first month trying when my doctors told me we would need help and to only try for 3 months then see the RE. So one never really knows until you start trying.

Since you are only going to start TTC in 2007. I would wait until next year to go under Dh's insurance. By then you would know if there were any problems.

I was on the pill for over 10 years and I got my BFP after 2 months off of it.....Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Since you are under 35, the doctors will want you to try for a year before doing anything with infertility.

so.. since you'll have a year to try i dont think you should get it now, you can get it next year if you'll need it.
