Re: Opinions.... is getting married a right or a privilege?
It's a right ... It's a free country and I should be able to do what I want as long as I do not break any laws while doing it .

Re: Opinions.... is getting married a right or a privilege?
It should be a right. If 2 people want to love one another and commit to be together forever, they should have the right to legally wed and be eligible for all the rights that would entail (insurance, pension, etc).

Re: Opinions.... is getting married a right or a privilege?
I don't really consider it either. I consider it an individual choice. The fact the the government has placed itself in the position of granting people the right or not is absurd to me.

Re: Opinions.... is getting married a right or a privilege?
IMO, it's neither...
it's a choice...and NOONE should make any limitations on who can or cannot make that choice of their own free will.

Should EVERYONE be able to get married? Do you think there should be an age requirement?

If it was a right then people could marry whomever they want.this is not the case.

I'm sure she meant within reason. Obviously, no one wants 5 year olds getting married!

owning a home and having children is both a priviledge and a right too- but the question was about marriage

I know but take away the emotional aspect. If anyone (without physical problems but you know what I mean) can have a child, does that make it a privledge?

I was just pointing out the danger in the argument that 'anyone should be able to marry anyone'. That's where you get into questions about should polygamy be legal, etc.

Re: Opinions.... is getting married a right or a privilege?
It's a privilege in this country. Should it be? Nope. It should be a right - and along with it all of the benefits.
The fact that a gay male could work his entire life, support his partner & have the partner unable to collect social security or have any legal rights towards his estate unless they've locked it up in trusts disgusts me. But I digress...

not really the argument i was making, but whatever....
i was merely saying that marriage imo is a choice...(first and foremost)...obviously with the gov'mnt involvement and the requirement to obtain a marriage license, on another level it's a priviledge, and a right...
but ultimately, it's a persons CHOICE to marry or not....
and when 2 consenting adults are in love, and want to get married, who is ANYONE to tell them they can't? jmo

yes......i think its a God given priveledge...and its also a priveledge to afford to take care of the child in the proper way..and being old enough to keep the baby (as opposed to giving up for adoption)....then we can go into adoption ..its a priveledge to be able to adopt...the costs, the income needed to support a child...etc.

There are some people that don't believe in God so for them it may not be considered God given and one of the beauties of this country is the separation of church and state. The definition of privledge is "A special advantage, immunity, permission, right, or benefit granted to or enjoyed by an individual, class, or caste. Such an advantage, immunity, or right held as a prerogative of status or rank, and exercised to the exclusion or detriment of others. " Therefore to me, if all people can do it, it is a right.

Aren't privilege and right the same? You are granted privileges and you are granted rights.

You can come up with extremes to anything. Hey, if all parties in the polygamist marriage are willing participants then I wish them well. As far as a child wanting to get married I believe that is the parents job to figure out.
