Oppositional Defiance Disorder
My nephew was diagnosed with ODD (Oppositional Defiance Disorder) and my sister is at her wits end. Does anyone here have any experience or advice that I can pass along to her? Feel free to PM.

i had a student with ODD and i won't lie, it's rough! without knowing specifics i can only recommend a psychologist work with him if one isn't already.

Thanks for responding. He is already with a psychologist but the day to day is terrible.

I agree. That is a very difficult disorder to work with. I suggest seeing a psychiatrist that may be able to help control the behavior with psychotropic meds.

i agree....
in addition, the key is consistency with these kids. you can't back down. it can be hard.... i had a student with ODD scream all day in the classroom, run out of the room, etc. when she didn't get what she wanted, etc. but as long as you DO what you SAY, slowly they being to realize than defying your every command isn't going to work. it is not easy, but as long as the parents can be as consistent as possible with consequences and requests and follow a routine where thechild knows what is expected of them and the consequences--- it helps a lot.
