Organic Foods. Please help me out.

So I want to do my part to make Earth a better place for my kids and their kids and .... well you know what I mean. Also, DH and I are starting to eat healthier.

I told him today I want to start shopping at Trader Joe's and buy/eat organic.

He asked my what the difference is. I really didn't know what to say Chat Icon but I know that for example (this is what I told him) organic chicken is not pumped w/ antibiotics and such and organic veggies and such, there are no pesticides used.

What else makes Organic foods better for our bodies and environment.

TIA!

Signed, The Organic Idiot!Chat Icon

Re: Organic Foods. Please help me out.

those are the 2 biggies.... the pesticides don't always wash off Chat Icon

I've seen somewhere online a list of the top 10 fruits/veggies that everyone should buy organic, becuase of the high amount of chems AFTER food preparation... I think peppers were at the top of the list.

there's also a list of veggies/fruits that have practically no pesticides remaining, so it's not necessary to buy them organic... I believe onions were on that list....

I thought that, and told DH that too, and he said "So we shouldn't worry about it until we have girls?" (we have an 11 mo old son)

I said, "Um, no. Troy has hormones too."

Re: Organic Foods. Please help me out.

the pesticide argument is pretty persuasive IMO.....

I'm a neuropharmacologist... you'd be SHOCKED how similar pesticides are to toxic agents like nerve gas....

sure, on your peppers they're in low doses, but over the years it definitely adds up....

Re: Organic Foods. Please help me out.

Produce grown organically has ALOT more nutrients than commercially grown produce also... for example, they found that organic spinach had 97% more iron.

you mean the food lists, right?

(There is no list for the structural similarities of pesticides to nerve gas agents.... many of these compounds are irreversible nonselective serine hydrolase inhibitors (meaning they completely block many enzymes at once, causing chaos in the bodies of bugs and people)... I did my dissertation work in a lab that studied serine hydrolases, which is why I know such odd detailed info....)

as for the top 10 veggie lists, I can't find the original one I read years ago, but I did find this list of things not to buy organic and this list of stuff we should buy in organic form

I will say the original 'buy organic' list I saw had green peppers... I remember that, becuase DH and I eat about 8 green peppers a week, and that worried me greatly!

I only purchase the Antibiotic free chicken when I shop at Stop and Shop... It seems like a few other know about this small area of the store... When I see some I have to buy it right away because most of the time it's all gone...

and it's made by Bell & Evans.

Re: Organic Foods. Please help me out.

Theres a lot of good info out there right now on this.

One good book that is easy to read( I got at the library is

External Image

AMAZON LINK

Also if you go get this months "ShopSmart" magazine ( by consumer reports..sold everywherE) ..it has a GREAT easy to understand comparision of what you should buy organic and why. I gave it to my mom to read to get a better idea and she found it very informative.

I also read in defense of food , that was a good book, but a bit hard to get into ..its a lot of "facts" .

Each food item has a different benefit of why organic versus not.

The few things I would ALWAYS get organic are poultry, beef, Milk, dairy and certain thin skinned veggies and fruits because of the pesticides, growth hormones and antibiotics.

I buy organic groceries like mac and cheese, cookeis, crackers etc because of the additives. the studies on what additives have done to our society as far as aging, cancers etc is staggering and scary.

We are the only country that has high fructose corn syrup in more then 50% of our packaged foods..

No other country in the world has it. Its health risks are well documented.

We also are the only country in the world that has a lowering puberty rate. It has lowered over the years and no where else in the world. Its all about food consumption...

<---getting off my soap box.

Hope some of that helps.

Re: Organic Foods. Please help me out.

oh, I should add pre-packaged foods:

organic pre-packaged food doesn't have all of the preservatives and additives that others do.... so you avoid not only the hormones and pesticides, but also the chemicals and artificial sweeteners.

End result: they almost always taste 10 times better too Chat Icon

Re: Organic Foods. Please help me out.

dm24angel, you rock....

it's so true with that @#$@#$@# corn syrup.... another thing that's messing up our bodies: the ratio of omega 6 vs omega 3 fatty acids in our diet... thanks to all of that Chat Icon soybean oil in pre-packaged foods Chat Icon

I cook all meals from scratch and try to use canola oil whenever I can... I also take omega 3 supplements (I have a fish allergy).... I swear I feel so much better. I've read that diets similar to mine help improve symptoms of autistic children, and children with ADD.

on a brief organic tangent....

I was in the mood (preggo food craving again!) for flavored milk while in the supermarket.... the nesquick bottles are soooo fake and nasty.... then I saw an organic strawberry milk box in the dairy section

strawberry bliss Chat Icon organic pre-packaged food ROCKS Chat Icon

Re: Organic Foods. Please help me out.

Also with organics, if you shop at stop and shop, they have their own line of organics called Nature's Promise. Its less expensive than "brand name' organic stuff.

Re: Organic Foods. Please help me out.

ShopRite has their own line of organics too. I got their organic apple juice this week (on sale Chat Icon) and it was quite nice!

They also have a nice variety of veggies.

Fairway in Plainview also has a huge selection, and if you are really into it, I am looking into a CSA that deliver fruits & veggies for you on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.
