Oscar needs to burn some calories!!

He has gained some weight and the vet says he is at the top of the range where she wants him to be. I want him to be closer to the bottom of the range because of all I have been through with my other dachshund and his back problems. I don't think this is due to overeating. He gets no table food and a minimum amount of treats. I know that the weight gain is because we have not done our long walks since before I was pregnant. When I was pregnant, I was sick and could not go. Now I can't manage to walk the dog with the baby stroller but can't leave the baby. I am going to make a point of starting the walks when we have child care. He does go on walks with DH at night but he used to do that plus the walks with me. Oscar and I both need the walks and I miss it so!!!!! Also, I'll figure out a way to play fetch with him in the yard. Maybe I'll use the baby monitor or put the baby in the swing right near the sliding doors. I feel guilty about this!!!!!

Could you put your baby in one of those chest carrier things while you walk with your dog? I see lots of people doing that out here... Not that I have a baby so I don't know exactly how that would work.

I have decided to try that. But..........I was very sick when I was pregnant, so I am weak. I don't know how long I can walk with the added weight. I think I am going to have DH walk with us while I try it out. I use the carrier in the house but not often. DH is wondering if I would have a hard time picking up the dog's poop when I am wearing the carrier.

Re: Oscar needs to burn some calories!!

Can the vet adjust his diet at all? Maybe the balance of carbs & protiens is off?

I know how hard it can be to engage in exercise with the baby.

Can you set up maybe a small agility-type track in your yard? I know when a friend's dog got a little big she had someone come and create a small bree-appropriate agility course & it worked wonders.

Re: Oscar needs to burn some calories!!

Would it be possible for your husband to walk Oscar with you? That way you could put the baby in the stroller and your husband will walk him.

It could turn out to be some really nice family time, get Oscar involved in an activity with the baby and it gives you and your husband some time out side in the fresh air together.

Sounds like a win/win to me!

Re: Oscar needs to burn some calories!!

To answer the 2 posts above--OMG we would have so much fun with an agility track!!!!!!! I wonder what I can look into getting. Oscar would love it. He's probably not trained well enough to actually compete in it but that's ok.

As for DH taking walks with us, we enjoy that but I can take Oscar out a lot more often if I am able to do it alone. DH has that long commute to the city and I work from home sometimes, so I am here enough to go on more frequent walks.

This is a great starter course. None of the obstacles are too high or too difficult....

DrsFosterandsmith beginning course

Also, I know you will, but just to throw it out there, please check with your vet to make sure that the obstacles are breed-appropriate.

If you have a treadmill in your house, train Oscar to use it-
