Re: Other readers in your "Family"

My mom always bought me books and encouraged reading, although she is not a reader. She will read a book or two a year. My dad does not read books at all.

My DH is not a reader. He is a first chapter kind of gut. He starts a book, but has not finished one in years.

My sister Gina is a reader. She is 13 and I will swap some of the YA books that I have read with her.

I was thinking about it and there really aren't many readers in my family at all! Chat Icon

Re: Other readers in your "Family"

My mom and sister love to read just as much as I do. My Dad does not neither does my DH.

In my family, it's a woman thing!

Re: Other readers in your "Family"

My father is a huge reader. He's always tried to encourage me to read and now that I've asked to borrow Stephen King books from him, he's s excited! Chat Icon It's so cute, I love my dad!

My mom reads, too, but more sporadically, like my DH. He'll finish a book in a month and I'll finish it in a couple days.

ETA: I try to encourage my brother and sister to read. They are both younger- 16 and 18. I did get my sister to read all the Twilight books (and she loved them), Gossip Girl, and Pretty Little Liars, and I've loaned her other books but she never reads them. My brother is even more stubborn, I lent him the Hunger Games when I finished it in October and he just text messaged me last week that he read the first book and loved it. Told you so! Chat Icon

Re: Other readers in your "Family"

Growing up, my mom was a HUGE reader--mostly mysteries. she would sit around on sundays and read all day. on vacation, she would pack tons and tons of books and basically read a book every day or every other day on vacation. I don't know when it stopped, but I haven't seen her read a book in ages, and she is even retired now.

My dad is a reader, but different kinds of books and materials. He reads at least one paper every day. he reads non-fiction- mostly history and biographies, but every now and then will take a fiction recommendation from me. He reads an hour or two in the afternoons and on vacations.

My DH likes to read, but it goes in phases. He doesn't read any fiction. He was in the army and sometimes read books about war and war-related events. He gets into various hobbies and reads books about his hobbies--marathons, biking, and now books about fixing up houses, etc.

Re: Other readers in your "Family"

My DH is a huuuuuge reader! Almost everything he reads is non-fiction--history and the law.

My mom sounds like yours--I was always encouraged to read; she'd take me to Barnes and Noble for my birthdays as a kid and I could pick whatever I wanted, etc. etc. but she herself is not a big reader. She reads the newspaper and magazines; otherwise, maybe three books a year--fiction. My dad enjoys a good non-fiction book and may read only slightly more than my mom. He recently retired so I'm wondering if that will change...

My sister isn't a big reader either--a handful of books a year if that.

Where did I come from?? Chat Icon

So far, my girls love to read and I take them to the library all the time. They love going to B&N and picking Scholastic books from school. We do our very best to make sure this is a lifetime love!

ETA: Everyone in DH's family is a huge reader with the exception of one brother. His parents are CONSTANTLY reading!

Re: Other readers in your "Family"

My mom reads but usually self help books, I dont think she's read fiction since she was in college.

Both of my SIL's are big readers like me, we always trade books or ideas.

Neither of my sisters really read much. DH read the Hunger Games Trilogy and that was it...other than ESPN magazine I think it was the only thing he read in the 9 years we've been together.

Dad reads sports books and only once in a while.

I've been a huge reader since like 1st grade. I remember going through 3 or 4 childrens (chapter) books a week in second grade that my aunt enrolled me in a book club.

Re: Other readers in your "Family"

My mom and I are huge readers. Since I was young, we would sit in the house without the TV on, in the same room all day, both with our noses buried in a book, only getting up to eat and to go potty Chat Icon

DH NEVER picks up a book (ok, he read 2 fishing books in the 10 years I've known him). He won't even read the books I've written for Pete's sake. No one in his family reads either.

I read with the kids every night. I would like them to be as addicted to reading as I am--I would like to be able to share that with them. If I didn't have the kids and had more time, I'd easily read 2 books a week--lots of different genres, but mostly fantasy.

Me, my brother, and my dad are big readers. My dad mostly history and philosophy books and me and my brother are huge fiction readers. DH will start a book, lose interest, and put it down.

I don't think I've ever seen my mother read a book Chat Icon just magazines and the newspaper.

Re: Other readers in your "Family"

I come from an entire family of readers!

I don't ever remember seeing my dad without a book. When I was little, he always had a paperback tucked in his back jeans pocket with two or three more in the car. My mom is also a huge reader.

When we were little, my parents would take us to the library once a week and we could pick out whatever we wanted. Then Friday night we would have pizza for dinner and talk about the books we were reading. We were always in summer reading book clubs. Forget it when they had those scholastic book fairs at school - it was like Christmas!

My younger sister and I are still voracious readers. My older sister, not so much, but she does read sporadically.

DH never really read before until he met me. Now, he actually likes it and last night he actually asked me if I could give him a good book to read!

My parents are both huge readers. I would say my Mom reads 3-4 books a week and my Dad 1-2. DH hates reading though.

Re: Other readers in your "Family"

we're all readers but different kinds. mom loves to read, but is picky with her book choices. dad likes newspaper and articles better. brother reads books but again his chosen ones. prefers articles online.

DH reads articles, occasionally a book but is VERY VERY picky.
i stick to my fantasy books and my favorite authors. once in a while, i try something different.
DS (9 months) loves to be read to and already has his favorite books! Chat Icon

Re: Other readers in your "Family"

My mom and dad both like to read. I have 3 sisters. One I don't believe reads at all for fun, 1 will read books occasionally, and the other will read prob a book a month.

My MIL and FIL both love to read as well and my FIL is always taking books and movies out of the library. My MIL belongs to an online book site and purchases books through there and also just recently bought a kindle.

My DH doesn't read at all. I try to encourage my kids to read because I LOVE reading. I want them to grow up and be content to just sit down and read a book and enjoy it.

My mom, dad, DH, one brother and I are all readers. This has been a big factor in why we don't own e-books (yet) because many of our interests overlap and we swap among ourselves like crazy! Chat Icon

Re: Other readers in your "Family"

I was always the reader. My dad will read his hobby magazines and my brother started reading from time to time. My husband will only read if we are on a beach and he is into the book. I have been a bookworm from the time I was very very young. I used to get yelled at because my parents' bedroom was directly across from mine and I still had the light on because I was reading. They finally bought me a booklight when I was a teenager!

ETA that my mom was never a reader at all and still isn't!
