Our new cat has dry, flaky skin what can I do?
I was brushing her today , so much fur coming out! then I noticed that the hair along her spine is a bit more dry than rest of her body, so I looked and I saw her skin is very dry & flaky. I just got her a brush and Lambert Kay Linatone Shed relief , mixed it with her food and gave some to her directly. I'm hoping with regular brushing and this supplement the shedding won't be as bad, but not sure what to do about flaky skin. This must be why she is itching so much, def no fleas, the vet checked her last night and said she is clean . But didn't mention anything about dry skin. Is there anything I can do for dry skin?

This happens to my cat also in the winter - she sheds a lot and gets dandruff. I give her a Lysine treat everyday for her eyes, but it is also said to promote healthy skin and fur. You may want to try that.
In my expereince, this happens throughout the winter and only stops when it starts to get warmer.

Science Diet makes a cat food for this condition as well I think it's called skin and coat formula or something like that.

I give my dog salmon oil. Not sure if that's the protocol for cats too but it could be super helpful if it is.

She is also shedding A LOT, the vet said it's not normal shedding and seems to be connected to her dry skin and all that, but she says the shedding will get better as her skin gets better and as she gets used to us more. She said stress = excessive shedding in cats

diet is also a big factor in skin health. Being a shelter, she may not have gotten all that she needed. I would make sure you are feeding her good food (I used to give them Wellness but that became so now we do Iams).

Re: Our new cat has dry, flaky skin what can I do?
Just a thought, does the cat have an appointment set up with the vet anytime soon? I know that I personally would like to have my vet's opinion, especially if I am going to get started on a regimin of supplements.
When we adopted our dog Charlie from the shelter a year and a half ago, she came with all of her vaccinations, but there was still one free checkup as a followup with the vet. I made the appointment for about 2 weeks after we adopted her. It didn't cost me a thing.
You might want to find out if any local vets have something set up like this with the shelter that you adopted from so that you can get the kitty checked out!
Imagine --- as much as a pain in the neck it is for you to be cleaning, brushing, vaccuming, etc. constantly ---- it must be awefully uncomfortable for the poor kitty!

Re: Our new cat has dry, flaky skin what can I do?
Please do not bathe the cat without the vet's approval on this ( you didnt mention it here but you said it in the other thread). Cats generally are not bathed by humans, young cats esp. Def just discuss bathing with the vet.
