Outfits and sizes...

I had my shower last week and got a ton of clothes. Now it's the game of figuring out what to return etc.
my main question is... do we need a ton of newborn clothes?
My last sono they were saying DD would be about 8 lbs. I have my36 week growth sono in a week and we will see then what they say. But I know those aren't always super accurate.

Anyway... do you need a lot of actual outfits in newborn and 0-3 or were your babies mostly in onesies and footies and stuff?

I would keep the 0-3 and return newborn (still keep maybe 6-8 outfits). My babies haven't worn anything other than footies/ pjs yet.

I used only onesies and sleepers in newborn this time, except for a holiday outfit. How many will depend on your baby and how much you want to do laundry. I think I have about 8 sleepers and way too many onesies.
My DD was 7.5 lbs at birth and was in newborn for about a month. I probably could have moved her up to 3 month size sooner, but when she was born 3 months were too big.

My daughter was measuring close to 8lbs at 37w and she was born at 39w weighing 7lb5oz. She was in nb for at least 6 weeks. My second DD was born at 7lb15oz and was in nb for about a month.

0-3 was way too big for awhile. I had to actually buy more nb clothes.

Oh wow okay. I didn't realize even at a higher 7lbs they would be in newborn clothes that long. Maybe I should keep more than I planned then.

Dd was 7 lbs at birth and was in newborn for a long time. The newborn was a bit big on her at birth.
I had to go out and buy more.

DD was born at 7lb 15oz but lost weight in the hospital. She was in newborn for about 6 weeks. My mom actually returned the newborn clothes she bought prior to birth because the Dr were expecting her to be around 9 to 10 lbs. We had to go out and buy more because 0 to 3 month were way too big.

DS was 8.4 lbs at birth and in nb clothes for 4+ weeks. Even with that, I pretty much returned all clothes that came with a receipt.

Re: Outfits and sizes...

Every child is different and the growth songs can be way off. DS1 was 8lbs 1 oz at birth and was in newborn clothes for 5 weeks. Since he was 13lbs 1oz at 2 months, he had to have been at least 10 lbs before he outgrew newborn clothes. He was on the shorter side so that mattered too. DS2 was 7lbs 11oz at birth and wore newborn clothes for 6 weeks.

My kids were also EBF so between spit up and blowouts, we generally went through 2-3 outfits per day. They were mostly in one pieces or some type of footed pajama set early on.

I would keep the newborn outfits and keep the tags on. Return whatever you end up not using.

Same here. Keep some newborn footies and maybe don't wash everything until the baby's here. I just passed all my newborn stuff to a friend bc they thought they would skip to 3 month stuff and then had a 6 pound baby!

I had big babies...9.6 and 8.9. Neither one of my kids wore newborn size clothes or diapers. 0-3 was fine for me.

Unless you have an unusually large baby (like 10lbs, which isn't terribly common) you need newborn clothes. The vast majority of babies will be in newborn clothes for at least a short time.

My DD is 7 weeks and only started wearing 0-3 last week because she is super long and couldn't stretch in the NB footies anymore. She can still wear newborn pants and shirts. She is close to 10lbs. 0-3 were way too big in the beginning.

Re: Outfits and sizes...

Thanks everyone!! We took tags off a few newborn footies and stuff so I can wash them and then kept the tags on everything else newborn wise. We went to carters since that have a great return policy and got footies and sleepers and stuff like that in newborn and three months. And I will just keep the receipt and the tags on them so we can return whatever we don't use.

It depends. We had barely any NB size clothing and my daughter was in NB for a while. She was swimming in 0-3 months. My mom had to go out and buy NB outfits while we were in the hospital.

You really don't need that many but definitely a few! I was so naive and thought I would have a baby right in 0-3m clothing. Nope! She was 6lbs 13oz at birth. My mom had to bring a NB size outfit for her to the hospital and when we got home, my husband went out and bought a few sleep and plays which she lived in. She was in NB clothing for about 6 weeks. I had 6 sleep and plays, maybe 8 onesies, and very few outfits.

I was told DD was going to be big- like 8.5 lbs. She was a little 6 lb 8 oz peanut. She stayed in newborn clothes for quite some time. It's such a crap shoot. I wouldn't return anything just yet, but keep the tags on some stuff! I wish I had done that more- I tore open all like 10 swaddling devices we got and she hated to be swaddled. Chat Icon

DS was 6 lbs when I brought him home. I only had 2 newborn outfits and just put him in 0-3. They were big but we made it work.

Same. I have like 10 swaddles that I'm hoping this baby will like because dd hated being swaddled.

Re: Outfits and sizes...

Both of my kids were in newborn size for over a month. I really didn't dress them in anything other than footie pajamas for that month though, but between spit ups and such, I did have to go out and get more pajamas for them. I would say make sure you have at least 8 - 10 newborn size footie pajamas.

My DD was 6lbs 2oz at birth and NB size was huge on her. We ended up having to get some preemie clothes for her for the first 2 weeks until she was able to fit into NB size.
