Pacifier use 6 week old BTDT moms

Hi. I am confused about using the paci. I've heard that in newborns the sucking reflex is strong and it soothes them on the other hand they can become dependent and you can end up plugging it back in all night (this is happening).I find I am having to use the paci to soothe him more and more. I am just looking for some advice. DS is EBF and it is in no way affecting his eating.

For some kids the paci is a necessity. I also EBF, and if I didn't use the paci DD would use ME as her paci.

I'm not going to lie, I spent many nights popping the paci back in, but for DS it was a necessity and the only thing that would calm him/help him sleep as a newborn.

6 weeks is so little, I would do anything that comforts him.

i didnt think I was going to use them...but it helps them soothe themselves so much and I felt...they had a need to suck a lot more than necessarily being hungry. I gradually wean them by just using it after feedings and when they nap/sleep as thy get older. My DD was fabulous at cutting it cold turkey at 2.5 bec it stayed in her bed for the last year and never left her pillow!

We have been using a paci since day one. He only uses it when he first goes to sleep. He spits it out on his own and never cries for it. Our pedi recommended it because it can help prevent SIDS....

I always gave DS his paci to put him to sleep once it fell out that was it, he wouldn't get it back. we weaned him off the paci at 6 months

DS hates it too. He likes the bottle much better. sometimes if he's in a fit i give him a little bit of the bottle and that calms him better than the paci.

the paci is probably what your DS needs to soothe himself.

DS used it from day 1 until about 14 mos.

We cut it down a lot when he was about 9 months - only gave it to him at naps, bed or when he got really bad.

Sometimes we could pull it out of his mouth and he wouldn't notice.

You are going to have to take it away from him at some point but if it helps him and helps me - i'm all for it.

It took DS about 3 nights to be completely paci free

ds LOVES his paci. it soothes him but its a pain when it falls out of his mouth in the middle of the night and he wants it. but its better than hearing him cry and not able to self soothe

the new thing he learned is to pull it out of his mouth while he still wants it and cries bc he cant figure out how to put it back in

if it soothes ur ds then i would just give it to him.

Neither of my children ever used a pacifier. I don't see the need and neither would put it in their mouth anyway.

Re: Pacifier use 6 week old BTDT moms

I ONLY use it to calm him down - Once he's happy again, I take it away. He never seemed to mind -
And I don't put him to be w/ it in his mouth - I DO leave in in the crib b/c now he'll wake up and sometimes put it in his mouth - but I don't put him to sleep with it

Yes, babies need to suck and its fine to use. They don't become dependant until after 6mths.

I only give it to my DD when she is fussy during the day. She is not dependent on it for sleep

ITA!!!

they still have that instinct to suck...it's so strong at that age. i would give it to him. it's not interfering with your BFing and it's soothing to him, so why not?

DS never wanted a pacifier but DD loves it. She only uses it in the car and during the day when napping. At night she falls asleep without it.

same here! it totally made me crazy having to be on binky duty running in and out to put it back in....but it's not forever! you might find that your DC refuses it in a few weeks..you never know. for now at 6 weeks i would keep using it. you can break the habit when your DC is older and better at self soothing.
