While I think it's great that McCain chose a woman VP she is anti a woman's right to choose and also believes in teaching intelligent design instead of evolution in our schools. These are two major deal breakers for me.

No one who supported Hillary for her views would support Palin. They're total opposites!!
If this DOES sway Hillary supporters then they are voting solely based on gender, which is sad because gender has no bearing on a person's ability to do this job.

either way, it is none of anyone's business why people vote the way they do. it's a private matter, that's why voting booths have curtains.

Just saw her speech in Ohio on cnn.com
Biden is going to eat her for lunch at the VP debates.
isn't it so sad that it turns into that though? These politicians just tearing into each other, make me so disgusted, she has no experience though and you are totally right, he is just gog to run experience-circles around her, poor lady, sending her into the lions den I like her, but definitely a poor choice for a running mate for a VP.
but OBAMA has no experience! This (Palin) is the runnig mate - not the main candidate- the MAIN candidate should have experience imho.
I would not say Obama has NO experience, after all he has more experience than Palin! Obama has experience at the federal level, which Palin has NONE. She served on the Wasilla AK city counsel, was mayor of Wasilla AK and then governor of AK. Has she ever worked in Washington?
If elected, she would be a heartbeat away from the presidency and McCain would be the oldest elected president if he were to win. That scares me a little.
why do so many people think whoever the VP is that is running with McCain is a heartbeat away from the seat at president?? Do people actually believe he is going to croack a year after getting into office?? I mean yes he is old and would be the oldest president if he wins...but Obama could god forbid develop cancer and die a year after getting into office as well. Another thing that bothers me with Obama--everyone thinks he is going to be the first African American in office--but for technicality he wont be...he will be the first Bi-racial president in office!! Because his mother is white, and if I were her I would be very disappointed in my son not owning who he is...he is 1/2 caucasian and 1/2 african american...not 100% african amercian!!
I am registered Independent and my views are in the middle as of now. I don't like hilary and i don't like obama but i did like biden's speak the other night so i am trying to figure it all out which one i would want to vote for.

i disagree
women are VERY different than men and i think its silly to think that those differences will not translate into her career
examples:
at the debtes, people gave reporters/co-debators sh*t for being "too hard on hillary"
hillary was seen sobbing away on many news clips..
also- women may be softer (OR HARDER) on some issues- or take isues more personally
or may fight harder to protect what women beleive in and protect the needs of women, whatever they deem those needs to be
so YES i do think gender does affect a person's politicial career and goals
and i dont think its stupid if part of a person's reasoning for voting for her/a woman was because she was is a woman

I hear you.. but I'm not saying that it's stupid for PART of the reasoning to be based on gender. I'm saying SOLELY based on gender.
Believe me, this morning when I read about Palin - not knowing anything about her before today - my interest was piqued. But when I read her stance on the issues it stopped right there.

I just wanted to say that federal experience has never been a pre-requisite for the job. For example Bill Clinton was governor of Arkansas before becoming president. Most analysts were suggesting that a non- congress person be picked as they would have executive experience. A Gubernatorial candidate is often favored in these situations as they have experience running a government whereas member of congress are legislative and not executive.
Kind of off topic but with respect to life expectancy for males being 75 - this number is an average which takes into consideration people who die at 18, 22, and 90 for example and averages it. It is not to be taken literally as a measure of someone's life. I think all of us on this board can recognize the fragility of life at any age.

based on that I am not sure how many HRC supporters would vote Republic just for her
I certainly wouldn't
only liberman was going to maybe sway my vote- b/c he is a democrat pretending to be a republican- like Bloomberg

ITA! The only Hillary voters she could sway are those who are woefully uninformed. Hillary and she are night and day in their views. He wont' siphon off many of those votes with this choice.

Dare I say it...If Mccain croaks while in office (if he wins) we could have a woman President!!!! Not that I want him to croak, but I was just pointing it out...
dont worry, i thought about that too...
very interesting proposition
me too.
don't get me wrong - i like mccain, i think he is a hero and i would NEVER wish bad upon him - or anyone for that matter. but the thought of "i wouldn't mind her as president" did cross my mind -- i think she would be great.
i like her - a lot.

I really urge everyone who likes Palin to really look at her policies. This shouldn't just be about male/female. I agree, its great she's a woman, and I'd love a female president. That said, she's very conservative. Now if you are conservative and agree with her policies, then for you I'm happy you have someone you like. However, if you don't agree with her policies, don't let the fact that she's female alone sway you, its what she stands for that should make the difference.
Thank you! I couldn't have said it better myself.

She has an infant?????
I'm sorry, and I know I will get flamed for this, buy why on earth would you WANT this job with a four month old? Sorry, I know I'll hear "You just took women back 25 years!!" but seriously, a baby??? I fully support that women can do things 10X better, faster and cleaner than men. And I also thinks it's about freaken time that we have a women in such high power. But not with a baby.
This is the kind of job that OWNS you for several years. This is not a job that it's okay to not give your all. So something has to take a backseat. What's it going to be? The country or her baby?
Don't get me wrong, I know she has other kids but they are at an age, even the second youngest, where they don't need mom as much. I know lots of women in politics have babies and families all the time, but this isn't just ANY political job.
I want to know, and yes, it's sad, that for anyone in office, this country comes before family because that is what the roles of President and Vice President require. This baby doesn't deserve to take the backseat.
I know there are people who want to see her in office to show the world that women CAN do it all!!! That babies can't hold them back. And it's true, babies don't HAVE to hold someone back from having a successful, demanding career. Babies are not the death of careers. But we also are in a country where mothers get 6 weeks maternity and women are desperate to have our country follow Europe's model.
I'm all over the place in what I think about this and I know MANY of you will disagree. So flame away...

god morning
its early and i need my coffee, lol.
but why cant the MAN take are of the baby ? why is that idea so CRAZY?
she is a high profile woman. her country and career are very important.
no, its not the traditional household, but i am sure she can do it, if she couldnt, she would not have accepted the nomination in the first place.
its probably not what many of you would do in here...and its probably the people who think "moms should be at home with their kids" that will have the biggest issues with this.
but i think she wouldnt have accepted the job if she couldnt handle it. she has done many things with her life this far. she has already juggled governer and mom of 4. and mayor and mom of 4- those were the times when she was REALLY trying to prove herself politically (when the kids were younger- imagine 4 kids - children- runnig around while you were trying to run the state), but she still managed to raise her children - they seemed to have turned out fine- dont you think? so what make people think this one baby wont turn out ok if she is vp?

I totally agree with this. I don't think there is any difference between this and saying that Obama shouldn't be President because he has young kids who need him around. Tons of people in this country work demanding jobs and have children.

I agree totally for several reasons. One being that dads are equally important and the other being that whatever works for a family works and you are right, she has handled this plate.
I understand it's also a once in a lifetime opportunity. I understand it's a huge compliment to who she is and she'd probably be a fool to pass it up, but I don't understand why. There's only so much any person can give to the things in their lives. I'm not saying women, I'm saying people. You can only do *so* much before you have to give something up to spend that energy on something else.
ETA: What I am NOT saying is that having a baby will prevent her from doing her job well. I am NOT saying that at all.
And chances are, she will not be doing the hands on raising of her baby. People have to admit that this kind of job is a bit time consuming. I just don't understand why she would want to pass this time up. I am not doubting her abilities, but I'm questioning her choice.

the "why" is, and this is jmo, but id think that this woman really cares about where her state was/is going- she stood up against corrupt republicans and democrats- she has an approval rating of 90%! she really cares and she is really making a difference in alaska.
now, she was just asked to potentially make a huge difference in the US and possibly the world! i mean, that is the opportunity of a lifetime.
and lets say mccain wins, lest just say. we KNOW he is a 1 term president. lets say they do a decent job together. it could be hillary vs palin in 4 years. now that would be a race!!
so im sure she sees these things on the horizon. how could she pass it up? i wouldnt in a million years. but thats just me.

of course but do you honestly think tha the VP is always tied up, I know ;I've seen Pres BUsh vacation more than I have in the past few years, I'm sure she will know how to balance, and I agree let her husband be the primary caregiver.

Not all of them do. Some people get extreme pleasure out of their career and would not change the choices they made. Question for you - if Obama wins, are you also concerned about him looking back years from now and wishing that he he hadn't been President so he could have spent more time with his kids?
