PARENTS: COME IN NOW...Did Anyone Ever Hear Of This? MMR Vaccine Related
My Mom told me she saw a Doctor that always has segments on News 12 and she said there is a SIMPLE blood test for parents to get for your child that will show whether or not that have this certain "thing" (forgot the name) in their blood that could tell if they have a chance of developing Autisim and to do this BEFORE you do the MMR Vaccine.
I am so asking my DR, anyone else know about this?

i havent heard of anything like that.
im curious though, even though I dont think there is correlation between vaccines and autism.

I don't know about a blood test, but peds do start looking for the "signs" of autism from approximately 6 months on.
I don't believe there is a correlation though..

I have not heard of this. I have to believe that if there were some sort of "marker" that you could look for in a simple blood test to see if DC was at higher risk for developing autism, it would be something that more people would have heard of and it would be blasted all over the news.

Was it the micro array test? It's a genetic test.
It has become VERY popular. This is why it is taking so long now to get the blood results.

i agree.
i personally think that the reason that autism was originally linked to the MMR vaccine was because the more visible symptoms of autism occurred around the same time as most children were given the MMR - around 18 months (give or take a few months). however, alot of children with autism do show some signs of it at a much younger age.

I am taking an Exceptional Children class right now and I have researched this in depth. I actually just finished a final paper on it.
Jennie Garth is a celebrity very active in the community against the MMR vaccine.
I will tell you MY opinion from the research I found..... - There is little to no research actually supporting the connection between MMR vaccine and the higher chances of Austism - What HAS in fact (supported by research) caused the increase in the number of Autism cases diagnosed is better diagnosis procedures and a better understanding of the signs and symptoms of Autism - For me personally, the benefits outweigh the risks and the research doesn't support it enough for me to worry. My will be vaccinated.
If there is anything else I can help you find or read...please let me know. I have tons of research on this!

Honestly I don't think MMR is what causes autism or even brings it on. Nor any other vaccine. As far as a blood test looking for something that would determine it I am sure moms would be all over that. As would pediatricians!

I know what you are talking about. I forget where exactly I read it but thee was something about a genetic predisposition to autism that they believed was triggered by the MMR vaccine.
I'm not so sure that I believe that without the vaccine these same children would not have develeoped autism anyway though.
It's worthy of asking your dr about though. Good luck and keep us posted!

For those "questioning" this test. It DOES exist. You just never heard of it just yet.
Mostly because it is was really for children with special needs.
We went to see a medical geneticist in order for him to order this test.
But the word is coming out and the test is becomin very popular. To the point that now I will have to wait 8 weeks to get results.
The test was not really promoted to the general public because it would be $$ for insurances to cover ALL babies born. Maybe in the future it should be. Right now, it is mostly for kids with special needs.
I was told that only 25% on the test would show chromosones issues related to autism. In our case with DS, DH and I are ONLY doing this test in regards to have another child and the chances to have that child with special needs. IF DS tests positive, DH and I will have to take the test too. If we test positive our chances are 50/50 to have another child with autism.

ITA. DS just got his MMR and Varicella last week, and I let him have it while I'm PG with #2. (The OB gave me the go ahead since my bloodwork showed that I'm immune.) It was especially important to me that he got it because of the recent measles outbreak in Brooklyn. DH works in Peds in one of the hospitals there and I didn't want DS to catch it somehow through DH's work.

Re: PARENTS: COME IN NOW...Did Anyone Ever Hear Of This? MMR Vaccine Related
i have a MMR question that sounds a bit kooky. I have a DD who just turned 2. When she was 22 months I went in to get her MMR and the nurse said absolutly not because i was pregnant at the time! ( I was living overseas where they give the MMR at 2 years) I had never heard of this, not like I was getting it?! She also said to wait because the shot is a live virus and if I am changing my 2 year olds diapers it is not good when also dealing with a newborn
I have made an appt here with her ped for next month so i will ask him then but it seems very odd. She was an older British nurse so maybe this is a very old theory???!!!
Even though the MMR makes me nervous I want her to get it because the consequence of getting one of these and dying is terrifying. In England there has been outbreaks of MM due to many new parents not getting the shots anymore
I also heard they no longer seperate the shots.
Another question, why do BOYS seem to have higher rates of autism? must be something with testasterone
Thanks and sorry for so many questions!!!
btw- did you mean Jenny MCCARTHY?

Not it's not. It's 1/150 for the general population. 1/94 for boys.
For DH and I, it would be "literally" 50/50 if we all test positive.

I had similar concerns because I'm in my last trimester and DS was scheduled to get his MMR and Varicella- both of which are live viruses. We checked with my OB, a peds infectious disease specialist, and DS's pediatrician. My OB said my bloodwork showed my MMR and Varicella up-to-date and told me it shouldn't be an issue to be around DS. I had chickenpox as a child, so I wasn't as concerned about the varicella....more so about the MMR. It is true there's a slight chance of catching the virus from changing a diaper, but it's not a concern if your bloodwork shows you're immune. That's why we went ahead and let DS get his vaccines.
Edited for spelling.

I'm trying to find info on the blood test. So far, nothing is definitive, more like educated guesses, and incidental connections.... However, it's good that they are working on finding links related to blood and genetics. Most of the info seems to be from 2005, and all of the articles I've seen say they won't have a "reliable" test for 5-10 years from then.

Did you pay out of pocket or did your insurance cover it? Did your regular ped. order the test or a specialist?

Re: PARENTS: COME IN NOW...Did Anyone Ever Hear Of This? MMR Vaccine Related
I have read a ton of books and articles. To be honest, the DTaP vaccine scares me more in some ways than the MMR vaccine. The DTaP vaccine is linked with more neurological long term side effects, which is why the old vaccine that we got as children was done away with.
I was going to split the vaccine, which is now no longer offered. That being said, after the research I have done, whether the Measles vaccine is adminsitered in a single vaccine or in the group vaccine the risks are the same. The exact same ingredients are use and the exact same side effects are possible. The Mumps and Rubella portion of the vaccine is not troublesome at all.
People have a misunderstanding as to why they think the vaccines cause autism or other developmental disabilities. The MMR, DTaP and a few other vaccines can cause swelling in the brain which we may not be aware of...which is why some kids get fevers or extremely irritable. It is not worrisome if the swelling is minor and only last a day or two and usually is not noticeable by parents. It is when the swelling continues that possible damage can be done. There are a lot of horrible side effects of vaccines that unfortunately many people are not aware of. This is why I chose to break up ALL of DS's vaccines.

I'm assuming insurance is going to cover it. I didn't specifically ask for the test. It was ordered by the pediatric neurologist. In fact, I'm still a little unclear as to what it is going to tell me.
Which reminds me, I should call them today and hound them...

when i was vaccinated with MMR my mom said the dr. gave it to me while i was running a fever when she brought me in. later that nite or the next day i forget, but my mom said my fever spiked to like 105 and i was convulsving and having seizures. I was in intesive care for 2 weeks and the drs told my parents i'd be lucky if i were a vegetable the rest of my life.
Here I am at 30 and just fine.
SO the post above about causing fevers and stuff peaked my curiosity b/c i was already running a fever when i was vaccinated. apparently a big no no.
The best thing we can do is educate ourselves and put our kids on a vaccination schedule we as parents are comfortable with.
the pediatrician at our childbirth class said the vaccines are not available as separate shots anymore..i didnt know they were available that way either.

I should have been more clear in my post. But some kids get extremely high fevers after the MMR, seizures, etc. (and some other vaccines can cause this). This caused doctors to question what effect theses vaccines are having on their brains and nervous systems.

The MMR as a combo shot has been given since 1971, although not really commonplace until the late 1970's - while the individual shots (measles, mumps, rubella) had been given for years as individual shots (with measles being the oldest vaccine circa 1956).
Merck - the only licensed manufacturer of both the combo and monovalent vaccines in the United States ceased the manufacture of the monovalent vaccines in October 2008. Merck is supposed to start production of the monovalents again, but it is unclear if it will be 2010 or 2011 (Merck says 2 years, but not when the 2 years started running).
