Q about MMR vaccine(especially for parents who broke it up for DC)
My DD is supposed to get her MMR vaccine next month. Originally we wanted to delay it a little, but since we are going to travel out of country in September we decided it would be best to vaccinate her before we leave. But we would like to break up the MMR shot. I know some parents on here did just that. I called the ped the other day asking him if he would do it and he said that he can't "break up" the MMR vaccine b/c MMR is one vaccine ,BUT he can give her MMR and then in few months Chicken Pox vaccine. That means that instead of MMRV vaccine she will still be getting whole dose of MMR and it WILL NOT be broken up correct? After all the reasearch I am still very confused after talking to the ped. So I just wanted to ask how exactly did the ped do it? Please help me understand how some peds break up the MMR vaccine.

Some doctors will not break up the MMR at all. That is just the stance that they take. The chicken pox is a separate vaccine.

yes,you can't brake up mmr,it's one shot, but you can give that, then later the chicken pox at another visit, thats what I'm going to do..but the mmr..is 3 shots in one needle.just like the DTP,,it's 3 in 1.

My understanding is that you CAN break up the MMR, but some doctors WON'T. I know that my doctor won't.

you can break them up. When we do vaccinate the boys I will be given each shot 6 months apart.

I guess one reason why I am so confused is that, he didn't say , OH I AM SORRY , SOME DRS DO IT BUT I DON'T BREAK UP THE MMR VACCINE(or something like that) instead he said : well MMR vaccine is one shot so it can't be broken up, but we can do the CP vaccine later. As if I was asking him something that has never been done before .

You CAN break it up and as a PP said, some doctors won't. Ours does.
Some only get the combined shot from the pharmacutical rep they deal with, therefore their office only gives the combined shot... similar reason why some docs only carry/endorse Enfamil vs. Similac... pharmaceutical companies
I broke up their shot. They got measles one month, two months later mumps and will go back soon for Rubella. I never do more than one shot in a four week period, JMO.

We broke up the MMR. DD just got the measles vaccine and will go back for the mumps in a couple of months and then rubella a couple of months after that. So yes, it IS possible to break it up, for sure. DD did also get the chicken pox vaccine, but that was its own separate needle.

I am just guessing, but some doctors may feel so strongly that it is not necessary to break it up so it is just not offered??? It would have been nice if your doctor gave you more info (and accurate info, since technically it can be broken up) so you could make a more informed decision though.

Re: Q about MMR vaccine(especially for parents who broke it up for DC)
I just called PED office again, the nurse said that if we were not going away , PED may have agreed to breaking up the MMR vaccine, but since we are going to be around millions of people(airport/plain) and then in a foreign country, he can't risk not giving her all the shots DD needs to have . I am just sooooo worried and so confused as to what to do.

Why didn't he just say this in the first place, then? Sorry, but I feel he is being disingenuous with you. He won't break the shot up because he doesn't stock the separate vaccines (he only stocks the combo shot, so it's much easier for him to tell you that's all that's available). Usually you have to order 10 or so vials of each vax -- since he doesn't support breaking up the vaccines he doesn't want to order all those vials. He should have just been honest about it up front.
I agree that your DD should be vaxed if you are going over-seas, but you could still have her fully vaxed and split the shot.

Re: Q about MMR vaccine(especially for parents who broke it up for DC)
The vaccine can definitely be broken up. Johnny has had measles, followed the next month by mumps and he'll get rubella mid august.
Some doctors WON'T do it. Maybe they feel it isn't necessary, or it's a price issue..I'm not sure. But it can be done. My doctor was more than obliging, especially with the issues we've gone through with Johnny. I felt better breaking it up in his case.

Re: Q about MMR vaccine(especially for parents who broke it up for DC)
I just went on a cruise with DD we went to florida and the bahamas- I think bahamas is considered out of the country and on a cruise she is exposed to way more people than a plane- the terminal for the cruise is just as bad as the terminal in an airport and DD does NOT have the MMR or the chicken pox vaccine.
my ped wont split it up but someone on here said you can get an rx and there is a pharmacy in queens I have to find that thread where you can get the vaccines yourself and bring to the dr to administer.

Well, that makes much more sense. It's a personal decision. My advice is to do as much research as possible to make an informed decision that YOU are comfortable with. No one can tell you what to do.

I think she means just split the shot (each part separately) but give each part before you leave. Not sure if you have that much time, though (would require at least 3 months).
