Parents of kids that go to preschool

Do you kids come home and tell you what they did that day?

Or if you ask, they tell you what they did?

Well - sometimes she does and sometimes she doesn't.

I try to ask her a few questions throughout the day - i don't want to annoy her too much and ask so many questions.

I ask her if she ate her snack..
What the other kids ate..
What songs did they sing..

etc....

I see the other mommy's ask their kids questions and the kids ignore them or tell them things they did in bits, so i think its normal.

When I ask they both say either "Nothing" or "I don't remember". I have to ask a million questions "Did you color today? Did you paint? Did your teacher read you a story? What was it about?"

I was just talking to another mom about this today actually. She said even her 2nd grader will say he did nothing at school, and she says "So you were there from 9-3:15 and did nothing?" and then he'll start talking.

Re: Parents of kids that go to preschool

DS is 3 1/2

He usually tells me a bit right when I pick him up..

what they had for snack (VERY important LoL)

if anyone got in trouble (what a little tattle tale)

if they went to the playground or not

The teacher tells us what activities they did.. painting.. projects.. so I usually ask him about that, or he will show me if it if it's ready to take home.

Then when he talks to my parents later on in the day I get to hear a little more about what he did.

I ask a zillon questions and usually get an "I don't know" or "nothing". Luckily we get a daily report with smiles for eating, napping and behavior. She is so proud of those smiles. Chat Icon

DD is 4 in November and goes to pre-k. I usually need to ask a few questions and then I get an overflow of information. Who cried, who ate what for snack, who went to the bathroom and when, etc. Chat Icon

I asked DS just today who he plays with and he said noone, he plays by himself. Now I don't actually think that's true because he's very social, I just think he doesn't know their names yet.

Re: Parents of kids that go to preschool

I have to ask specific questions to get answers out of Jared.

What book did your teacher read at school today?

Did you make pee pee at school by yourself today?

What toys did you play with at school?

Did you learn any new letters today?

Who did you play with on the playground?

When Jared first starts out in school, he never knows the kid's names so he says he plays with boys and girls.

Jack (in pre-k) tells me he did "zero!" Chat Icon

Key is to ask specific questions. Like most, the most info I get is about the snack and who got in trouble. The teacher has a dry erase board outside the classroom door that sums up what they did each day so I know what questions to ask.

Maybe suggest that at your dc's school so you'll know what they did and be able to talk about it with your child.

When I pick him up there is a board with details of what they did. He also has whatever project he was working on in his folder and or his cubby. I also ask more questions like "who'd you play with today," and "what was your favorite part of xyz?"

When I ask they tell me nothing. Later in the day they will talk about different things they did but they will bring it up.

Exactly what I get from my son and what I do to get out info. The vest time to ask is as soon as we are in the car ride home. He also often answers with I am ignoring you...lovely!

Same here. DS will tell me about snack and what he played on outside, but nothing more than that. Later in the day things come up. DD usually only tells me the bad things that happened to her that day, like someone not sharing with her or her not liking the juice she got.

Re: Parents of kids that go to preschool

Glad to see I'm not alone in the lack of responses! Sometimes she'll be excited about something and tell me without prompting (like yesterday - when I picked her up and she told me how they painted her hand, and that she played on the tire swing).

But when I ask questions, I get very little info, unless they're "yes" or "no" responses. "I don't know/remember" is a favorite Chat Icon

Re: Parents of kids that go to preschool

DD is in pre-k. She tells me bits & pieces. She'll tell me who she played with & what they played & that they went outside. I'll ask her what she learned (for example, I know right now they are doing shapes & colors) like what color they are working on & she says "None today" & then I find a worksheet in her folder that she did in class that day. Then later on I'll ask again & get a little more out of her. Sometimes I have to as several times to find out anything she actually did!

Re: Parents of kids that go to preschool

Some days DD will tell me LOTS about what they did & who she played with. Other days, not so much. Most days she's a chatterbox about how much fun she had, etc. I also sometimes have to ask specific questions, like some of the above posters mentioned.

Sometimes. Depends on DC's mood and if DC is tired or not.

Sometimes it's like pulling teeth to get him to say anything but fine. Other days he's talking non-stop about every minute of the day once we get in the car.

Re: Parents of kids that go to preschool

I actually have a poem that I put up in our preschool class about this:

What Did You Do Today?

When children come home at the end of one day,
the question they're asked as they scurry to play is
"Tell me, what did you do today?"
And the answer they give makes you sigh with dismay.
"Nothing, I did nothing today!"
Perhaps nothing means that I played with blocks,
or counted the number on our clocks.
Maybe I painted a picture of red and blue,
or heard a story about a mouse that flew.
Maybe I read a book today, or went outside to play.
Maybe today was the first time my scissors followed a straight line.
When you're only four and your heart has wings.
NOTHING can mean so many things!
