Passport Q - original marriage license or copy ok?
The application to change my name on my passport says "you must submit a certified copy of your marriage certificate"...
I feel a little silly asking this but what's with the "certified" part of it? Can I send a copy or must I send the original? I figure with all the wedded ladies here, someone would know.

I recently did this as well. I sent a copy. I assume that was not an issue since I just got my new passport the other day!

I am not sure - since the above poster said she sent a copy and it was fine. However, I sent my original and they sent it back a week or so after they sent the passport - certified mail so that it didn't get lost.

Certified means the original marriage certificate that was issued by the county where you were married. I was told that a copy will not be accepted.

This is what I was told and just mailed my application in with original yesterday. I sent it certified mail and it's supposed to be returned to me. The other poster is lucky the copy wasn't an issue.

I used to work for the Passport office. A certified copy is a copy that you request that has the state seal/stamp on it. Cannot be a photocopy or anyting like that. The original is the one you receive when you are married, i would not recommend sending that one in because i have seen numerous marriage certificate's get lost, def request a copy and send that, just make sure when you run your hand over it you can feel the seal or see the stamp of the state.

Yupp- it has to be an original or a certified copy- meaning a copy obtained from the city of ny, with the seal on it, not a 5 cent copy from the photocopier at the bodega down the block.

As the AP said, when I got my passport after getting married, I had to send in the original certificate with the raised seal.

I sent the original. I think they mean that at the time of marriage you also have a second one with a seal not just a photocopy.
