pasta or macaroni?

OK Italian LIFers, educate this irish girl. I recently bought a pasta maker and have been experimenting. I shared this information with my Italian friend and before I could finish saying the word pasta she yells, "MACARONI!".

Since my friend is Italian I trust that what she says is true. However, I often see the word pasta on Italian menus. Are the restaurants giving macaroni the Americanized name? I believe that Giada De Laurentiis refers to it as pasta as well. So what's the deal? Is it an old school New York Italian thing?

Hmmm....shall I muddy the waters even more? If someone asks what's for dinner I say pasta but I would equally say I'm putting the water up for the macaroniChat Icon

Re: pasta or macaroni?

My family has ALWAYS called it macaroni. Don't know why, just always did. NEVER used the term "gravy". Gravy (to my family) is brown and tops meats like roast beef.

My family is off the boat.

They will say pasta and macaroni, but use the word pasta more often.

Also, they say sauce or say the word in Italian; they don't say gravy.

Exactly...I grew up saying Macaroni and Gravy (I know the "gravy" thing is more a sicilian thing then an italian thing)

Well I'm FARRRR from Italian, but my cute little jewish grandma says pasta and gravy too. Once we ordered food and she said pasta with gravy..and sure enough, turkey gravy was on it.

100% Sicilian here and we NEVER called sauce gravy. My Grandfather would spin in his grave if I ever did.

Re: pasta or macaroni?

I've always called it pasta. (And when I've travelled in Italy- mostly northern- I've seen it called pasta.) I always thought that macaroni was a type of pasta. I could be a regional thing. Where's her family from there?

50% Sicilian here and we never called it gravy either. I had actually never heard that until recently.

Re: pasta or macaroni?

before i met DH, my mom called it whatever it was. ie, spagetti was spagetti, ziti was ziti, etc.

when i met dh and we had dinner at his house th first time, he told me his mom was making macaroni. i thought of macaroni and cheese.

it wasn't, it was pasta.

i've gotten into the habit of saying macaroni.
