paternity leave?

I was reading an article on NFR re: paternity leave. I never thought to ask bc I didnt think it really exists. Is it unrealistic in the workplace? I am still wondering how dh gets off the days after I give birth. Its not like he can go and request them in advance. How does this work?

Re: paternity leave?

I'm not sure how it works, but I know my DH's job gives him 2 weeks paternityl leave. I think he might need to requat the time in advance, I'll have to ask him. He is also going to use vacationa and comp days to stay home at least a month with us.

Re: paternity leave?

It depends on the company. My DH's company does not offer paternity leave Chat Icon. Outside of a week or so when we took vacation, he has banked the rest of his vacation days for the year, and is trying to include the sick days he never took.. Right now he plans to be home with me and the baby for about 3 weeks, maybe (hopefully) more

edited: I meant to add that he informed his department many months in advance that this was what he wanted to do in terms of taking his vacation time lumped together once I deliver, this way they were covered. They know he cannot give them an 'exact' date (who knows when I'll go into labor, etc) but they realize that starting anytime in October, he will probably be out for a chunk of time.

My DH gets 10 paid paternity days and then he can extend by using his vacation time.

ETA since my dh gets 6 weeks vacation plus 2 weeks paternity he can stay home paid longer than meChat Icon

DH works for a small company, they gave him 1 week paternity with each of our children, and then since it was a slow time when Andy was born, he was able to take another week vacation.

My Dh is using vacation time. I will most likely be in the hospital for Thanksgiving so he will have two holiday days, so at least he can be home with me extraChat Icon

Re: paternity leave?

Some (but few) companies give paternity leave. Have DH ask his HR person. My Dh just took vacation time.

DH gets a week paid paternity. I get no paid time (of, course I am taking my unpaid FMLA time), so actually, his "maternity" benefits are better than mine.

Re: paternity leave?

My DH is taking 3 months off for paternity leave through FMLA. He has enough sick days banked away that he can take off and be paid for it. All my DH has to do is put it in writing what his plans are and the tentative dates and give it to his employer. Its federal law so they really can't deny him it.
You may want to look it to this.

Re: paternity leave?

Some jobs do offer paternity leave. Don't forget, he can also use FMLA, that is not only for women.

But, if he works at a smaller company, then it may not be available.

Re: paternity leave?

Update: DH just called his company that stated he gets 3 months unpaid paternity leave (No way!) but its unpaid. So now my question is if he takes lets say a weeks paternity leave can he use vac/holiday so he can get $?

He should be able to use his saved vacation time to get paid during leave. That's how I'm structuring my FMLA -- I have 6 weeks vacation saved, which I will get paid for, the rest will be unpaid.

It sounds like your DH's company is allowing him to take FMLA for 12 weeks (like most of us preggos will be taking). But as is the case with us, he is not being paid for it. I'm sure that if he chooses to take those entire 3 months, he can perhaps try to use his vacation time during that period and at least get paid for some of it

Dh's company would have given him FMLA too, but there is no way we could both be out of work unpaid for that long Chat Icon

Re: paternity leave?

FMLA is for both moms and dads, but in reality few men can probably get away with taking 12 unpaid weeks and still have a stable job when they return. My DH uses vacation time so we just plan ahead for him to take about a week or so after the baby is born.

Re: paternity leave?

my dh this time around is taking vacation time or 2 weeks personal leave which his job pays for and you dont need a reason to take it. I think he took paternaty leave last time from his old job and they paid for 2 weeks

Re: paternity leave?

DH will have one week paid leave and then he will take whatever days he's accrued as vacation- he just started a new job 3 weeks ago.
