Paying a friend to babysit
If a long-time friend of the family babysits, do you pay her like you would any other babysitter? We don't pay grandparents to babysit, and this family friend is like an aunt to my DH, and DH doesn't think we should pay her... but I want to do something to thank her. Would a gift instead of cash be appropriate? TIA!

maybe a gift certificate instead. She may feel funny taking cash from you.

Re: Paying a friend to babysit
I've babysat all day for 2 of my friends. 1 paid, 1 didnt. Both circumstances their regular babysitters couldn't do it that day. Its up to you. A giftcard would be nice if you want. Unless you think you would return the favor if she has kids?

Re: Paying a friend to babysit
My SIL's mom watched DD for us one day when MIL had an appointment and knew she wouldn't take money from us. When I picked up DD I handed her a card and it had a gift card to one of her favorite stores in it.

Definitely a gift card. You won't feel guilty then about paying/not paying, she won't have to feel weird about taking it!

Re: Paying a friend to babysit
I think it's nice to offer but most likely she will say no if she enjoys spending time with your DC.
I babysat my friend's (we're not really close) child for 2 days straight and refused $$ when she offered. It just doesn't seem right to take the money considering I was unemployed and caring for my own child at the time.

Re: Paying a friend to babysit
I babysit for our friends LO. Our kids are 6 weeks apart. It is a lot of work. I watch the LO 3 days a week, 8-9 hrs a day. They offered at first to give me some compensation and I told them to wait a bit and make sure that it works out for all of us. 4 months later and it hasn't gotten any easier and I would like to ask them for a little bit of money each month. They were paying the other babysitter before I started. But, b/c they are friends and I have let it go this long I feel weird about asking. I also work PT and we are just about making ends meet, while my friends go out to eat all the time and buy whatever and anything they need without even a second thought.
Bottom line, I would have a talk with whoever is watching your LO. It's easier for you to offer than for the other person to ask IMO.
