Paying the nanny. BTDT moms please come in
So I got a great nanny for when I go back to work and have worked out an AWESOME rate for her.
We spoke this week and she is now asking me for the following. What I need to know is if this is the norm or if she is OUT OF HER MIND or if you ladies think I have some negotiating room.
She wants 2 weeks paid vacation She wants 5 paid sick days She wants to be paid for holidays and she wants to be paid when we take off from work.
I mean that's like a free month paid when you add up all this time. Why do I have to pay her when I do not need her? Or is this the norm.
TIA!!!!

Re: Paying the nanny. BTDT moms please come in
I don't have a nanny, but if this is going to be her full time job, it sounds reasonable. This is more or less what you'd be getting at a standard full time job, give or take the sick days maybe. And if you don't need her, it's not like she can go out and get other work at a moment's notice, she still needs to be paid. Think of it as if you go into your job one day and there's really nothing for you to do...you might screw around online all day but you're still getting paid, it's not your fault they don't have work for you to do, you know.

Re: Paying the nanny. BTDT moms please come in
our nanny isnt getting any paid vacation, holidays or sick time, she never even asked for it. We are paying her cash for what time she works. We did agree to pay her for half days if DH or I should take a sick day from work and not need her on an unplanned day, that just seemed fair to us, she didn't ask. We aren't going through any kidn of agency with her but are paying her a very reasonable rate.

I know SOME people have that type of arrangement. If you think her demand is outrageous (as I do) I would try and negotiate with her. Here is My deal with my sitter.
If I call out during the week (snow, not feeling well etc..) and keep the baby home she gets paid. If she calls out on ME for whatever reason I don't have to pay her. If I pick him up 1/2 day, she still gets paid for the full day. She gets paid on some holidays. MLK, Memorial day and so on...(whenever I'm off from school too) For example I had Monday MLK day off and she got paid her full week, including the Monday. When I have long vacations (xmas break for example) I do not have to pay her for that week since she didn't ahve the baby for the whole week. This seemed like a reasonable agreement to both of us so thats what we did. Oh and I do not pay her for any vacations. She is off all summer as I am. (I'm a teacher)
Good luck negotiating, Things like these can be uncomfortable to do.

Re: Paying the nanny. BTDT moms please come in
the 1st thing I want to ask is does she plan on claiming this income on her taxes, this will sway my opinion greatly, if so, I think that is fine, if not, she is out of her mind
my kids go to in home care and this is how it works
1. She does NOT claim the income on her taxes meaning we do not get the benefit of that deduction
2. She takes 2 weeks UNpaid vacation per year
3. we get 15 "sick" days per child where we do not have to pay if our kids stay home
4. we pay her for Memorial day, Labor day, Thanksgiving, Christmas eve and Christmas Day, 4th of July

Nancy~honestly in the city (even in Queens) this is a normal arrangement and I think its pretty decent for a nanny. Even though this is standard, you want her to be happy and stay with you for as long as you need her. So if this is what she wants, give it to her.

Re: Paying the nanny. BTDT moms please come in
I used to be a nanny. I am a little soft spoken so I basically just asked them what they were offering and was happy with that. But nothing was really set in stone. I got a weeks vacation the 2nd year I was there. Which I had to ask for because they didn't usually take vacations and I knew if I took off, they had to take off. But after 2 years, I needed a couple days. Paid or not (but they paid me). I only called in sick once in the 6 years I worked for them. They rarely took days off that weren't holidays. But I pretty much got straight salary year round. So if I had 3 days off besides the vacation the whole year it was a lot. But they took care of me and was happy with them. I don't think I would go into a nanny job asking for all of that. Its not me. Maybe a weeks vacation whether its paid or not and paid when you take off.

Re: Paying the nanny. BTDT moms please come in
Our Nanny never asked for anything so this is what we do
She gets paid if we go away, holidays, etc. Basically any time we tell her we don't need her, we still pay her
She gets 4 paid days off a year
If I get home early or leave late, she is still paid for the whole day
If she stays later than agreed upon time sched. we pay her per hour
She is amazing, we love her so I try to treat her the best I can

ITA! Not BTDT mom, but PG and in researching nannies and talking to friends in the city, it seems that a lot of people do have these arrangements with their nannies. However, I know that they specify beforehand which holidays are going to be paid (particularly holidays like Columbus Day, MLK, etc. where not everyone is off) and I also know that they often specify that of the 2 weeks vacation, 1 week is chosen by the nanny and 1 week is chosen by them - so it coincides with their week off.

I think this is normal. We don't have a nanny but use daycare instead. We have to pay for holidays, sick days, half days - it doesn't matter. If we do go on vacation we do get a little break and only have to pay half tuition.

Re: Paying the nanny. BTDT moms please come in
I have a nanny, and have found this set up to be the norm. Its actually really good that you have a nanny so confident and communicative that she is having this conversation upfront... Our first nanny wasn't, and I became resentful as she filled me in on her requirements along the way.
With that said, you don't have to agree to these exact terms, you can renegotiate so your both happy
We give one week of paid vacation, because we also know that we will take a week during the summer, and another week during the holidays. We give her advance notice, so she can plan her time off in advance.
We give 2 sick days
As far as holidays, I sort of lop that in with being paid for when we take off randomly...I do pay the weekly salary, even if we didn't use her all week. My logic is that I count on knowing my salary in order to budget, so it would only seem fair. But I would think that you could decide what holidays she had off and would be paid for, and ones that she could take off and wouldn't be paid for.

Re: Paying the nanny. BTDT moms please come in
We used a nanny 3 days a week...
When we were off on one of her days, we paid her.
When a holiday fell on one of her days, we paid her.
We never had any issues w/ sick days or vacation pay- she didn't ask for that.

Re: Paying the nanny. BTDT moms please come in
My nanny gets a salary, not an hourly rate. I have a more flexible schedule so if I want I "take over" and allow her to leave. I felt it was only right to pay her for the time she provides for us.
She essentially gets paid for holidays we get - which are not many. My company only gives 6 holidays a year. She gets paid for every day I get paid.
I extended 5 sick days to her for one main reason... I don't want a sick nanny taking care of my young kids. Swine flu was out with a fury when she started. I told her, if your sick take the days. I had a newborn who could not be vaccinated till a few weeks ago. She has not yet used any days off. She also is allowed to bring her child when she doesn't have child care.
Vacation... I would pay her if I am paid. She is salaried, not hourly. If I need her earlier she comes earlier without additional pay. However, she really doesn't get a lunch break bc of my 2 kids so I feel it's only fair to kind of let her leave early whenever I can swing it.
Most nannies I interviewed thought I was more than fair. I also reimburse for materials for art/crafts, etc.

Re: Paying the nanny. BTDT moms please come in
It is pretty reasonable
We pay our nanny 2 wks vacation - one week we select and the other she selects. I pay her for any holidays I am off from work, but if I have to work so does she.
We do not pay an exact amount of sick days, but i would feel bad docking her if she was really sick.
I always pay her if I give her the day off - I feel bad because it is her livelyhood. I think of it - if my boss told me not to come in and then I didn't get paid I would be a little upset.
If it is to much for you - try and negotiate and come to a conclusion.

Re: Paying the nanny. BTDT moms please come in
It's fairly normal, even for Long Island. If you think about it, if you send your child to day care, you are paying the same monthly rate regardless of how many days your child isn't there for holidays, vacations, illness, etc.
My nanny gets an hourly rate but also gets a minimum of 40 hours per week. So, if we need her 45 hours she gets paid for 45 hours. If we need her for 30 hours, she gets paid for 40.
She only works 4 days/week so the weeks there are holidays, we just tell her that day will be her day off and she works the other 4 days, 10 hours per day.
When she is sick, we let her take off or leave early. It's only happened a handful of times and we don't dock her pay. If it was happening all the time then we'd have a talk with her. This wasn't discussed when we hired her.
We also agreed to pay her a week's vacation but it's been a year and she hasn't taken one. We have taken a vacation but that isn't her fault so yes we paid her. This was discussed when we hired her.
Yes, it's all very expensive but she is young and energetic and good with the kids and we trust her and that is hard to find so we deal with it.

I would say it's normal based on my friends that have nannies.
You still pay the same amount in most daycares for holidays & when you're on vacation & your child is sick or isn't in school.

I so agree, when DD's were in daycare there were many weeks where one or both could not go b/c of fever - per daycare they had to be fever free for 24 hours and we abided... well I still had to pay the full price despite daycare not allowing them back. Plus, we had to take time off from our jobs to watch them. At least with a nanny, if your child is not feeling well you can leave instructions but not have to take off from work, unless you want to. Even if you do, during the 24 hour wait period after a fever you can return to work.
My nanny too is young and so full of energy. She can work the 2 kids in ways I would probably throw out my back. C-section destroyed my ab muscles... she can stand up from the floor hands free with both kids in her arms - God bless!

Think of it this way if you get a full time job don't you expect these same type of benefits?? I think it's great she communicated her needs and what she expects it will make it easier knowing you have someone who will give it to you straight.

TIA!!!!
I had a p/t nanny...30 hours a week and I did pay her for all of the above but broke it down a little bit differently...
3 weeks off which consisted of 2 weeks that she was able to schedule and one I schedule for her.
4 sick/personal days that were paid
Paid holidays and any days that I took off from work that she wasn't required to be here, she was paid for.
She was paid a salary for a set amount of hours and any hours over were at an hourly rate. An hour of commuting was also computed into that time.

I have a few friends that live in the city. I think this is the norm.
The 2 weeks paid vacation may be negotiable. Especially if you have to hire a nanny for the time she is off.
I have also heard of some nannies expecting a raise and want the fridge fully stocked with "their food" So just keep this in mind.
Good Luck Nancy!!

I used to be a nanny and I ALWAYS got exactly what you have on the list. I didn't even have to ask . I also have few friends who have nannies and I know few girls who are nannies and they all have the same deal. It is very reasonable , especially if you are hiring a full time nanny. It's not an easy job and I think they deserve 2 weeks paid vacation and sick days and paid holidays....

Re: Paying the nanny. BTDT moms please come in
We have had the same nanny for 2+ years now. She works for us 3 days/week, except in July and August she works 2 days/week (since I am a teacher and off during the summer).
(a "week" = 3 days for us)
-She gets 2 weeks paid vacation. -Reasonable amount of sick days (I honestly don't remember what we said - she has never taken advantage so it's not something I have needed to worry about). - Paid for holidays and days she doesn't work
So basically, we pay her every week the same amount regardless of how much she works. BUT, I did make the agreement with her that we can "trade" days that she doesn't work (since I teach, there are many days I don't need her), so she sometimes babysits on the weekend as a trade, and other arrangements we've come up with. She is so wonderful and flexible!!
I think what your nanny is asking is totally fair and reasonable. If you think she is great and she will take great care of your DC, then I say go for it! A happy nanny is a good thing.
