Re: Paying the nanny. BTDT moms please come in
I think many nannys expect this. Also in day care or preschool this is the norm.
My thoughts 1. is it under the table and can you get a deduction? if so than I would be more willing to work with her if not, i would try to negotiate a little
2. Did she start yet? Maybe she can have this after a set time period, a trial if you will, maybe 2 months of seeing how it works out first?
3. It depends on how well you are paying her and how you came to this number, If you are paying a lower rate than i would be more likely to suggest you meet this request. Also for example- these are made up numbers-- did you say 50 per day and she said 100 per day and she is getting 75 per day and she already feels she is getting less than she wanted or did she say 75 and you said OK? you said you got an awesome rate. does she think so too? Or is she unhappy with the rate?
I had a nanny that after 9 worked days wanted a 30% raise and wanted to do less. I was not happy with that. She said this is what i charge. I said OK and then 9 days later she said i think i deserve more. Ultimately i let her go but that was only part of why.

I have that arrangement with my nanny. I do try to arrange for her to take her vacation when I am away so I don't miss out on work for a week or two.
I think its only fair, it is her job, and everyone needs a little time off.

No nanny here, but just a curious mom. Many of you say you have a similar agreement, but for those of you who said that, is this a cash payment or is providing the IRS with a SS number to claim as a deduction. As a few pp said, this would be the primary factor in my decision, if I were to employ a nanny. If I weren't claiming her salary as a deduction, I don't think I could readily give her the same full time perks as if I were. Sorry if I am hijacking but I am really curious!

Re: Paying the nanny. BTDT moms please come in
Our daycare in the city had the following days off and we paid for them (same monthly rate no matter what):
-Holidays that fell on the weekdays, plus the day after Thanksgiving. -one week off during Spring break -the week after Christmas off -a couple of "staff-training" days -some holiday eve (like if 4th of July fell on a weekend) days -snow days
and of course, we didn't dock pay for anytime that DD was sick and didn't go in.
So in the end, it was about a month that we are paying for that she isn't in daycare.
With a nanny you may have more flexibility with the weeks off. Spring break for our city daycare was late April, which is impossible for DH to take off. I would take vacation time just to stay home with her by myself but if it were a month earlier, we would've done something, gone somewhere as a family.

I think this is somewhat negotiable. Obviously if you take off, she needs to be paid. I think that 5 pd sick days is a little excessive. I would agree on what holidays you will be paying her for, she may expect to be off holidays that you may need to work. Also, I would be careful about vacation time. I mean if she gets to pick two weeks off every year, will you be able to take off at the same time? How much advance notice does she give? Or will she just be paid when you take vacation which is reasonable since you probably get paid for your vacations.

If your paying a great rate & you are very VERY comfortable with her then she deserves what shes asking ~ especially if this is her only form of income.
Good nannys are hard to come by!
My mother is my sons nanny, and honestly I am VERY lucky that I dont need to pay her on the days that I dont work because I know that if it was anyone else, I would expect the nanny to ask what yours is asking for.

I would say it's normal based on my friends that have nannies.
You still pay the same amount in most daycares for holidays & when you're on vacation & your child is sick or isn't in school.
This is true. When I am home or my kids are sick and there are holidays or vacations the check still goes to daycare

So I got a great nanny for when I go back to work and have worked out an AWESOME rate for her.
We spoke this week and she is now asking me for the following. What I need to know is if this is the norm or if she is OUT OF HER MIND or if you ladies think I have some negotiating room.
She wants 2 weeks paid vacation She wants 5 paid sick days She wants to be paid for holidays and she wants to be paid when we take off from work.
I mean that's like a free month paid when you add up all this time. Why do I have to pay her when I do not need her? Or is this the norm.
TIA!!!!
This is what ours will get.
Its what folks get when starting a new job, seems standard to me
