Paying to eat at a New Year's Eve house party?

Some friends of ours are throwing a party at their house for New Years Eve. I got an email from them saying that they will be ordering a hero and salads to eat and it will be about $5-$7 per person. What are your thoughts on asking people to pay for a party you are throwing at your house?

I think its EXTREMELY tacky. Usually, don't you just bring a bottle and the host supplies the food?

Very shady, I could understand if everyone bought a dish to the party, But make them pay is a little lame.

Tacky.

Why not make it a potluck instead?

There is a potluck too. But, I guess she wanted to make sure there is other types of food.

*I* wouldn't ask people to come to my house and pay...

but it isn't a lot of money or anything so I wouldn't mind chipping in although I would find it a little odd.

Tacky. I would never invite people to my house for a party and ask them to pay!

Tacky!!!!!!

You have to assume some of the cost if you choose to host the party.

Re: Paying to eat at a New Year's Eve house party?

Depends. We are doing this for New Year's at our friend's house and it was our idea. We preferred doing this versus potluck. But, one caveat, was that the host didn't suggest this, we did.

Re: Paying to eat at a New Year's Eve house party?

Unless we all got together and planned this party TOGETHER and decided TOGETHER on the menu and decided TOGETHER on where the food would be ordered and decided TOGETHER how much we all wanted to spend, then I'd say it's incredibly tacky.
I would spend my last dime to feed my guests before asking them to pitch in. Not for nothing, but there's plenty of ways to entertain and eat on a budget.
Even having a BYOB party is better, to me. Or just a plain ol' potluck.

Re: Paying to eat at a New Year's Eve house party?

My thoughts are.......they shouldn't have the party this year then.

That is real tacky and they are/were better off asking their guests to make a dish instead. Especially if they are only offering a hero and salads.........?????? Granted it's a small amount they are asking......but again, why bother??

Dont' get me wrong......hosting a party can get very expensive......we have been hosting NYE for a few years now.......and this year my friends insisted that they are all making a dish.....and honestly, I am grateful for that b/c its a huge help. I will probably still get a hero anyway but would never think twice about asking anyone for money.

If you're inviting people to your house I don't think it's fair to ask them to pay as well.

Re: Paying to eat at a New Year's Eve house party?

My theory-
If you can't afford to have a party- DON'T HAVE ONE!

Don't expect your guests to fund the party that you HAVE to have but can't afford.

Beyond rude and tacky!

Re: Paying to eat at a New Year's Eve house party?

I would never...a hero is $100

If I am asked to bring stuff...I normally spend $15-$20 plus I would bring beer and wine- so closer to $50

It's not that $5 is a lot...but it's the point of asking...

I had a party here 2 months ago...I easily spent $300-$350 but no one showed up empty handed and I never would have suggested then chip in for the sandwiches I got
