Re: Paying to eat at a New Year's Eve house party?
weird but since it's a small amount I wouldn't mind especially in this economy where ppl are trying to cut back

But if you need to cut back don't have a party. It's not a necessity. Maybe the people you are inviting are trying to cut back too. If you can't afford it- maybe they can't either...

Unless we all got together and planned this party TOGETHER and decided TOGETHER on the menu and decided TOGETHER on where the food would be ordered and decided TOGETHER how much we all wanted to spend, then I'd say it's incredibly tacky. I would spend my last dime to feed my guests before asking them to pitch in. Not for nothing, but there's plenty of ways to entertain and eat on a budget. Even having a BYOB party is better, to me. Or just a plain ol' potluck. Agree

Tacky.
Why not make it a potluck instead? There is a potluck too. But, I guess she wanted to make sure there is other types of food.
ok, so it's ALREADY a pot luck, then she decided to add a new "dish" and she's making her guests fianancially responsible for it???
not something i would do. i find it very distasteful

Re: Paying to eat at a New Year's Eve house party?
I wouldn't do it but it wouldn;t stop me from going. I'd rather pay $5 to spend a night with friends than sit at home because they couldn't afford to have the party.
I hope they use a sharpie and write your name on a red cup at the door .

Re: Paying to eat at a New Year's Eve house party?
This kind of stuff makes me CRINGE. I have been friends with our close group through many years AND financial situations. If you can't afford to supply food - start the party later and only put out chips/dip/fruit. If you can't afford a party at all, then don't have one.
DH and I just went to a Christmas party at a friend's house with only six people. We brought a bottle of red, white and two six packs of beer. . . no one is going to come empty handed!!!!

If they wanted to throw a party and not pay for food, then they should have made it a potluck.
I don't expect my guests to bring anything, but sometimes they ask in advance so I request that maybe they bring a dessert or wine or something like that.

oh boy.
i'd go, not pay to be annoying and not eat the hero/salads. but i would bring my own alcohol, get drunk and mock them.
