PCOS & the dreaded belly fat..

Girls..I need help. I am so upset lately and I feel like a whale. I was diagnosed with PCOS in December and since then I have continued to go to the gym an few times a week, cut back on my carbs and sugar..everything you are supposed to do. I definitely have shaped up throughout my body EXCEPT for my belly. It is SO embarrassing Chat Icon I have this big belly (which would be fine if I were pg Chat Icon , the irony!) but it's so awkward. I have to buy bigger sizes just bc of that. Everything I wear shows my big spare tire around the middle. And I always think people must look at me and think I that I overeat, or don't exercise....Chat Icon I don't know what to do. My DH is taking his clomid to up his count and my Dr. has not put me on any meds yet until DH's count is up. Would it make sense for me to go on the Metformin now? I was reading online that it helps you lose weight. I just don't know what to do anymore. I seriously want to have liposuction at this point! I used to be a size 6-8 and now you don't even want to know. Let's just say I gained about 40 lbs in 4 years...and for 4 years I have been wondering what I am doing wrong only to find out I have PCOS. Sorry so long Chat Icon

Re: PCOS & the dreaded belly fat..

Jen - You described my feelings to a "T"! You are definately not alone. But, Metformin can help you lose weight, but honestly not that much. I found it made it easier to lose the weight that I've been unable to for so long, but it wasn't my miracle pill. I've been on Met since last Feb, and just by cutting the sugar and carbs, I lost about 8lbs in 3 1/2 months. I then went to a nutrionist that specialized in PCOS, and lost another 6lbs. Honestly, it wasn't until I joined WW in January that the weight has started to come off, I don't believe the Met has anything to do with it at this point. Did they do a glucose test on you to check to see if you are insulin resistant, or have you had your thyroid checked yet? Call your nurse, or ask to have another consult with your doctor. For me, at this point I don't have any insulin issues anymore, but they keep me on the Met because it's supposed to help with egg quality.

Yep, I am insulin resistant. I looked into going to a nutritionist but my ins. doesn't cover it Chat Icon I could try WW...I've done it before and had success...

In that case, if you are IR... you should definately be on the Met!

Re: PCOS & the dreaded belly fat..

I am so sorry you are feeling so down about your weight in your belly area.

I have PCOS and am IR, but do not have a problem with my weight. HOWEVER, I have been told by numerous doctors that diet and exercise is KEY! It's great that you are on the right track. I am on metformin (and it seems to be working well for me - I O on my own this cycle!) and from what I understand, it DOES help you lose weight. Have you been tested for IR? Has your doctor suggested metformin to you? It might help you in more ways than one - help with ovulation, weight loss. It's definitely something to bring up to your doctor.

Keep up with your diet and exercise! It WILL pay off in the end!

I have this big belly (which would be fine if I were pg Chat Icon , the irony!) but it's so awkward. I have to buy bigger sizes just bc of that. Everything I wear shows my big spare tire around the middle.

I literally could have written this. I am the SAME EXACT WAY.

Though I am about 100 lbs. overweight (warning, this will sound ridiculous), I am very well-proportioned, and actually not too uncomfortable with my size. However, I hold MUCH of my excess weight in my stomach. If I try to wear a pair of pants that's even a SMIDGE too tight, it makes my stomach that much bigger, and then I won't wear even the tops that fit me, because they look awful. Chat Icon

I lost 85 lbs. in high school. Was finally down to 160 lbs. Wore a size 10 dress to my prom. The only thing left was my stomach--though it shrunk in size, it didn't even REMOTELY go away.

I know it doesn't really help much when you're looking in the mirror and it's staring straight back at you, but...YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

As far as the liposuction, I am completely with you. I'm not the type to have voluntary plastic surgery, but I DID tell DH that the one thing I want to have done, when I'm done having kids, is to have lipo. on my stomach. I've come to terms with the fact that I will never be able to wear a bikini--but I'd like to feel a little more comfortable in my own body. Chat Icon

I don't have PCOS but I have belly fat. In fact, last week a woman at work asked if I was PG. You can imagine how that made me feel Chat Icon

I have the same problem. I have IR, I'm on Metformin, but the belly fat is still alive and well. It does't help that I'm using stimming meds like they're vitamins Chat Icon I'm on them so much. The Metformin didn't have me lose a pound. You are not alone! Chat Icon

I too have the same problem in the middle- Even when I was a little skinny marink in high school, it was always there...Now I have that lovely muffin top, and have gotten a few comments asking me if I was PG and all I can think is "I wish"...You're not alone- and when we have completed our family, some type of surgery will be on my list of things to do, after I do all I can on my own ..Chat Icon
