PCOS and weight - question
I'm a big researcher (sometimes too big ) and even before I went off the pill I started looking into all the things that cause irregular cycles (since that's what I had before going on the pill) just to get an idea of what to watch for.
I do have a question about PCOS. Everything I've read lists one of the primary symptoms as excessive weight. I am actually the opposite and struggle to stay above 'underweight' for my height. Does anyone know if this automatically precludes me from a PCOS diagnosis or is excessive weight a general symptom but not evidenced in everyone who has PCOS?

Re: PCOS and weight - question
My sister has PCOS and she is very thin.....I might have PCOS and I'm 25 pds overweight (to my standards)
My doctor explained to me that confirming PCOS is a clinical obeservation. They check hormones, do a sonogram, ask if you go months without a period, and excessive facial hair growth.
So with me my hormones are a little off and I do have some cysts but I get my period regularly. So they won't officially diagnose me with PCOS.

Re: PCOS and weight - question
Thank you so much for the info! It seemed odd to have such stringent symptomatic guidelines.
to you

My Dr who is supposedly an expert in PCOS says that you could still have it and not have all the symptoms. To me your symptoms sound more like a thyroid issue. This could affect your cycles. Have you had your thyroid checked. Do a search for PCOS on the IF board. You will find a bunch of info. Good luck

Re: PCOS and weight - question
What about those of us with PCOS and hypothyroidism????
What can we expect as far as fertility? Does anyone else have this issue?

I have heard that PCOS is one of the easiest problems to fix. The thyroid is trickier. It must beconstantly monitored through pregnancy and while TTC..

Re: PCOS and weight - question
You poor girls are reminding me of myself over the past 2 years!!!! First of all, RELAX!!!!!!
I thought my life was ending when I was diagnosed with PCOS. Things did not go well for me as they said the medication would help. It didn't help me. They checked me for everything!! (Thyroid, breast cancer, leukemia, etc.) Come to find out I have a pituitary tumor. (PCOS can be an effect of the tumor.) I thought the absolute worst!! DH and I just cried. I was determined to fight!!! I didn't need to fight too hard. Here I am 22 weeks pregnant!!!!!!!!!
Research is good, but don't kill yourself trying to find out everything. My advice is to tell your doctor EVERYTHING!!!! Even if you think it's a small thing, tell them. It was something so silly that I finally mentioned that made them change course and find out what was going on with me.
Good luck to you all!!!!!!!!

Thank you for sharing your story. It's really comforting to hear that we are not alone. My Dr is in the process of testing me for PCOS. I had the blood work done and now I have to go for a sono soon. I've been worrying about it like crazy. I keep blaming myself because I feel like I should have kept on top of my weight after my son My DH keeps telling me to relax and that we will get through whatever we get thrown at us but sometimes its hard to relax. But hearing that I am not alone with all this is extremely comforting.
