pediatric eye exam doctor recommendation please
I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for an optometrist that specializes in children's exams?
My 10 yo DD has been having some vision difficulties despite the fact that her last eye exam (last year at Davis) indicated great vision. She tends to read very close to the paper, tires easily, has difficulty keeping her place when reading, clumsy/bumps into things/stands WAY to close to people amongst other things... I've been doing some research on my own and it seems that these things can sometimes be related to vision issues that aren't found in a standard eye exam. We did go to a pediatric ophthalmologist - Dr. Cossari - last year, and found him to be less than helpful, rushed and with a rather poor bedside manner - when I started to explain that my daughter would practically put her nose in a book to read, he very rudely, and without even looking at me, said "I don't care about that sort of thing, it doesn't mean anything" with a wave of his hand. And perhaps it doesn't mean anything. But I'm not an eye doctor, so how would I know what is important and what isn't? I mean, I'm truly grateful that he was able to diagnose her atypical migraines... I just felt it wasn't necessary to speak to me like that. I was surprised, because he came quite highly recommended and I feel like everyone has had a great experience except me. I don't know... maybe it's me?!
Anyway. I've come across a few names and was wondering if anyone had any opinions (good or bad) on any of these optometrists. Or, if you have a recommendation other than the names I've found, I would love to hear it!
Dr. Michele Bessler Long Island Optometric Vision Development Garden City, NY (This one is far from me, but I will travel if it's worth it!)
Dr. Brian Berliner Lake Grove / Huntington Station (I think this is in LensCrafters, so not sure if it's any different than just going to Davis???)
Eye Vision Associates (there's a bunch of docs here) Lake Ronkonkoma
Perhaps a different pediatric ophthalmologist would be better than an optometrist? I don't know. I know I'm worried about wasting an MD's time again and feel like maybe an OD would be more inclined to listen to my concerns? All opinions, thoughts, recommendations, etc are welcome! Thanks everyone!

Re: pediatric eye exam doctor recommendation please
At first I was thinking that you would definitely want an MD, so an ophthalmologist is the way to go. I have one to recommend, but I also just wanted to mention that some of your DD's difficulties are sounding more like visual sensory issues than traditional vision issues. A few of the things you mentioned are on this checklist under Hyposensitivity To Visual Input. I'm certainly not an expert, but it may be something to consider. If you suspect this is a possibility, you may want to seek out a behavioral optometrist who specializes in this, instead of a traditional ophthalmologist. If not, I highly recommend Dr. Michelle Levi. She has offices in Plainview and Port Jeff. Good luck!

Thank you, yes! This is what I was thinking. The first and third listing in my post were doctors/locations I found through the College of Optometrists in Vision Development website.
I will definitely look into the MD you suggested as well... thank you for the suggestion.

I have a list of Developmental Optomotrists at work. They are your best bet for sure because the look at more than just eye health, visual acuity/corrective lenses. The COVD website is a good start.

My son also sees Dr. Levi and she is wonderful with him. He's been seeing her since he was 3 months old, he needed glasses at 17 months and is now 4 1/2.

My 3 DC's see Dr. Levi as well! She is amazing! I've heard nothing but great things about all the dr's in that office though (Long Island pediatric opthamology and strabismis - Dr Roberts, Dr Marmor, etc)
