Pedicure question

I know some people were told not to have a pedicure- I have been getting them all pregnancy but usually with no massage--so my question is I am 39 weeks, is it ok no to get a massage? Just wondering!!!

Apparently once you are further along the massing of the ankles can bring on labor (from what I recall - I might be COMPLETELY wrong Chat Icon - someone correct me if I am....)

Re: Pedicure question

You can get a pedicure & massage, just ask them to stay away from your ankles as it can bring on labor.

Re: Pedicure question

I have gotten pedicures WITH the massage and I am on meds and bedrest to stop pre-term contractions. I asked my Dr. and he said it was completely fine. Go ahead and enjoy! plus you are 39 weeks so going into labor wouldn't be a bad thingChat Icon

Re: Pedicure question

If you're 39 weeks and it MAY bring on pregnancy then I think you're fine to get one. I actually just got one last Friday and I was 39 weeks 3 days. I was actually hoping it would bring on labor, but it didn't. LOL! Oh well! Go and enjoy! I want my toes looking good when I deliver. One less thing to worry about. Chat Icon

I've never heard of it either. I got manicures and pedicures all through my pregnancy with DS and with this pregnancy as well.

Re: Pedicure question

I was just reading in the Pregnancy Week by Week book that it is good to get pedicures late in your pregnancy. I plan on going this week for another one.

OMG thats so funny!! I agree, I have been getting pedi's with massages. I heard at the end the massage can cause labor (not sure if thats a wives tail) but at 39 weeks that would be fine anyway!

Re: Pedicure question

My doc thinks its fine to get pedicures throughout your pregnancy. The way i see it now is at this point i would go to have the ped and massage just to bring on laborChat Icon

Re: Pedicure question

there's NOTHING wrong with a pedicure (as long as it's a clean place--you don't want paula abdul hands!)

it's the foot massage that's a problem. there's a pressure point that *can* bring on labor. think of it like acupuncture points--certain areas of the body do certain things for other parts.i don't know about you, but i never get a really good, thorough massage anyway.

i got them all through my first pregnancy and will with this one as well

Re: Pedicure question

I've been getting them with the massage!
I will not stop living & doing everything, it's 9 months! My mom did & ate everything when she was preggo w/ me and i'm fine. It's crazy how much so-called "restrictions" there are now.

Re: Pedicure question

You can get a pedicure and a LIGHT massage. No massage around the ankles and no deep digging into the foot. Reflexology is contraindicated while PG.

In Eastern Medicine you have "points" that are called "descending" points. You don't want to go too much around them. The concept is that it would bring on labor. But you kind of have to know where the points are to do it. Some women use acupuncture to bring on labor. You also have to do it with "intent".

As a PRECAUSION, massage therapists know not to work around the ankles to be safe.

Just tell the person doing the pedicule to get very lighly, not focus on just one spot and avoid the ankles.

Enjoy!!Chat Icon
