MPs across the political and gender divides have condemned former Labor leader Mark Latham's ''absurd and cruel'' remarks that people who choose not to have children are unable to love.
In a scathing column for The Spectator Australia about Prime Minister Julia Gillard's performance during the flood crisis, Mr Latham wrote ''she is not a naturally empathetic person - displaying, for instance, noticeable discomfort around infant children''.
The man who wanted to be prime minister says ''the femocrats will not like this statement, but I believe it to be true: anyone who chooses a life without children, as Gillard has, cannot have much love in them''.

Kate Ellis, the Minister for the Status of Women - who is unmarried and childless - said ''the suggestion that there is some simple equation between family structures and love is absurd''.
There is rarely love lost between Nationals Senator Barnaby Joyce and Ms Gillard, but the father of four came to her defence against Mr Latham.
''It is absurd and cruel in the extreme to think that a person who doesn't have kids is a less deserving human being or has less of a capacity to love,'' he said.
''I can assure you there are an abundance of people in this world without children - and for that matter with - who are caring and loving. Mark Latham appears not one of them.''
In 2009, the Senate president ordered Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young to remove her two-year-old daughter from the chamber, igniting a debate about accommodating carers and children in the workplace. Senator Hanson-Young said: ''My child adds a totally unique dimension to my life but it doesn't make me any more experienced or a better human being. The idea that a person doesn't have love in their heart because they don't have children devalues and undermines the value of what love is about.''
ABC news presenter Virginia Haussegger, who has no children, said: ''I dare him to come and say that to my face.
''I've never smashed anyone in the face but I am ready to give it a go. They are the most idiotic comments from someone who really should keep their mouths shut.''
In 2007, Liberal Senator Bill Heffernan questioned Ms Gillard's leadership credentials because she was ''deliberately barren''.
He apologised for being ''rude, crude and unattractive'' but said a politician needed to understand ''family and the relationship between mum, dads and a bucket of nappies''.
A spokesman for Ms Gillard said she had no response to Mr Latham. But her Minister for Human Services and Social Inclusion, Tanya Plibersek - a mother of three children, including a newborn son - said: ''Julia Gillard is a fine leader and she demonstrates that every day, both as Prime Minister and when she was minister of education when she worked tirelessly for the benefit of millions of Australian children.''
The former Victorian premier Joan Kirner said: ''My view is that it must be hard for Mark to gain a place in the sun these days and my particular view on his comment is that it is truly beneath comment.''

First, it's a ridiculous statement to say that people who are childless are unable to love.
With that said, I will say that prior to having children, I haven't experienced the type of love I have for my children at any other time, with any other person ever. Does that mean that no one else can? No.

But even though I think the guy is a complete & utter tool, a toddler has NO place in the Senate. There are enough toddler mentality in goverment.

Superiority complexes come in all shapes and sizes. This is just one sad example. It really doesn't surprise me, coming from a politician though.

As someone who is currently childless (well preggo but still) and works with kids I find this offensive. I love some of my students as if they are my own--seriously!. What a d!ck.

Wow! What a d bag!!! Seriously stuff like this gets me so mad. It's like people assume that your life isn't complete or good until you have children. This couldn't be further from the truth and it really ticks me off (and this is coming from someone who is pregnant). Children are not for everyone and it's more than ok to not want them.

One of my best friends in the whole world is childless by choice and she has the biggest heart of anyone I have ever met. She loves so deep and pure.
This politician is an idiot to a whole new level.
