People who don't to children when they say "hi"
I cannot stand people who don't speak to them when a child says hi. My son who is 2 will turn to me and said "he didn't say hi"

I know what you mean. This is around the time we started explaining strangers and manners.

I know what you mean. I feel hurt for my child too when that happens.
I recognize that not everyone feels comfortable around children or may not feel like responding to anyone for whatever reason.

I say hi to everyone's dog and baby. It's the polite thing to do.

Re: People who don't to children when they say "hi"
Because of things like this: http://www.lifamilies.com/chat/topic-320736-1.html
I realize that saying "Hi" is different than touching someone's head, but any contact with a child, even verbal, is a grey area. Many people are afraid of what may happen if they talk to a child, especially a man. I don't want to destroy my life, and my families lives because I said Hi to someone, and that kid's parents starts screaming at me, calling the cops, etc. It's not worth it for most people.
I do make faces at kids, mainly raising and lowering my eyebrows at them. Little kids love that, and most adults don't notice that I'm doing it, so I don't feel like I'm putting myself at risk.
It's sad, but this is how things are in our society today....

that is exactly my point.
And when does a child get taught who is a stranger and who is not when they are allowed to "talk " to strangers?
Honestly, I would rather a child not say "Hi" to me in a store...it will help them when they get older.

I don't get it, but it doesn't really bother me--DS doesn't say hi, but he smiles at people and gets no response sometimes, though often he does.
The people who insist on touching his hands though, those are the people who bug me. First of all, what gives you the right to touch my child, second, he puts his hands in his mouth, where have your hands been?

You just explained why people don't say hi. Your "line" is at touching his hands. Another poster's "line" is at touching their head. For some, it's simply talking to their DC. How am I supposed to know where your "line" is, and if I'm crossing it or not?
Until there are no child molesters on the planet, and innocent people being accused of being one just for being friendly, there will be a majority of people who will not say hi, just to prevent any accusations of impropriety.

It's sad but true. I say hi if a kid says it first, but i don't have a conversation or anything. I have this little 7 year old neighbor that likes to come over & talk to me when I'm outside & and I always wonder if her parents are going to freak out. I don't invite her in my house or anything, but if she is sitting on my lawn, I'm not going to ignore her.

Re: People who don't to children when they say "hi"
My DD gets so upset when people do this!
She asks me, "Mommy, why that lady not say hi to me?"
I just tell her that they must be grumpy and then we make grumpy faces at eachother which makes her laugh and she forgets about it.

Re: People who don't to children when they say "hi"
I must admit this and I know its bad, but DH is the worst offender of not saying hi to children. I yell at him all the time for this.
His excuse is he just doesnt like interacting with children. I know its extremely mean to say, but its the truth. Its the same for antisocial people, if a stranger says hi they just walk right passed and dont respond.

Re: People who don't to children when they say "hi"
I think its polite to say hi, but it should stop there. Not long ago, a young girl around 6 or 7 came up to me in the park and says hi, which i responded to. Then she asked me my name and what i was doing there and asked me to play with her. I told her i couldn't and tried to say goodbye and walk on, but she physically wouldn't let me pass. I looked over and saw her parents standing 12 feet away laughing and asking me why i wouldn't play with her. I was shocked and appalled that the parents allowed this interaction their daighter and a stranger. Then DH walked by, unaware of what was happening and she runs up to him and says hi, which he ignored and kept walking.
The parents still egged her on us and finally i was able to walk around her and the parents say "aww your no fun, go have fun with your boyfriend instead". I am still appalled to this day.

Seriously, people? It's saying hi, not picking the baby up and playing with them. People will find any reason to take issue with something.

Re: People who don't to children when they say "hi"
I have to agree I think "Hi" is perfectly fine as long as either DH and I are right there. What drives me crazy are the people who HAVE to touch, ask 100000 questions. But hello I have no issue with - and I hate when a kid says hi and is ignored.

Re: People who don't to children when they say "hi"
Would everyone feel the same way if the person they wanted to say "Hi" to their DC was a registered sex offender? They're allowed to go to the supermarket. They might be trying to avoid kids, and having random kids talk to them could land that person in jail again.
Yes, I agree that kids are cute, and it's nice to say Hi to them, but not every mother thinks that way, and not everyone wants to risk their freedom, career, home, reputation, etc. just because ONE mother considers that harassment, or inappropriate behavior.
I think it's very presumptuous to be upset at random strangers for not doing what your DC wants. Even if it's totally innocent. Maybe their DC just died a few days ago. Maybe they've been TTC for years, and talking to kids makes the rest of their week miserable.
In today's world, I'm surprised that people still EXPECT strangers to talk to their kids. My DS knows his address and phone number. If he talks to a stranger, "Hi" is one thing, but then he could just as easily spout out his address and phone number....
