Re: Personal Q: Birth Control
No advice since I use the pill, but you may want to X-Post this to Parenting since a lot of people over there are done with having kids.

Re: Personal Q: Birth Control
I don't think that you can get an IUD before you have a baby.
I've always been on the pill, so I can't help, sorry

Re: Personal Q: Birth Control
If you can't use the pill because of the hormones, then I doubt you can use NuvaRing. You'd be getting similar hormones, just taking them in differently. If you just find that taking the pill at the exact same time every day is difficult, NuvaRing might be just the thing.

Re: Personal Q: Birth Control
I have a friend who has the IUD. She loves it. She wants one more child but for for a few years so her dr said its great for her. When she wants to have a baby they just take it out. I am currently ttc but once I have a baby I may look into this. I am tired of the pill.

Re: Personal Q: Birth Control
how about the patch?
My mother was intolerant to pills b/c it gave her bad headaches and other issues. however, when she tried the patch, it was great for her and was the only thing to help with endometriosis.
there are risks for women over 40..not sure if thats you or not.
its real easy to use...change the patch 1x a week for 3 weeks, then get AF.
Good luck!

Re: Personal Q: Birth Control
I take the pill... no help
But, when I was questioning what to do I asked my gyno -- he asked me a bunch of questions and then suggested what he thought would be great for me and he was spot on!
Hope that helps.

I thought they didn't make the patch anymore?
And OP, I am pretty sure that you cannot have an IUD until you have given birth.

Re: Personal Q: Birth Control
My sister uses the Nuva Ring and LOVES it! She always forgot to take her pill so this is easier for her... I would definitely talk about other options with a GYN though. Good luck!

Re: Personal Q: Birth Control
I was on Depo-provera for years and it worked great for me. I've used EVERY method of birth control available.
I will tell you this though...I was on Nuva Ring and have always followed the instructions to the tee (being in the medical profession, I know not to mess around with these things) and low and behold
<----------------------------------- Baby boy is an "oops" on the Nuva ring. Guess I fit right into that 2% they warn you about on the label. lol
If the pill is no good for you, ask your doc about the Depo injection. It lasts for 3 months and you don't have to worry about remembering a little pill everyday. And it's mostly progesterone, where a lot of the pills are estrogen based---so the hormones may not affect you much as the pills do. It's worth asking about.
With Mirena---you can have it implanted if your doc will do it without previously having children----however, it's painful during insertion and can have complications if you've never had a child. I'm planning on having my doc put one in as soon as I deliver my baby boy. I don't want to end up with another "oops" anytime in the near future. (although he is certainly going to be the VERY BEST "oops" of my life!!!)

Well, I looked into NuvaRing and I might make the switch from the pill. I saw some mixed reviews about it here on LIF, but the pill also has mixed reviews. My doctor seems to like NuvaRing as an option and he's pretty honest with me (I don't feel like he just tells me what the drug companies want him to say). My husband would also pick a non-pill option if it was for him, yet he is able to give himself insulin shots!
ETA: I just saw the post above mine and it does seem like NuvaRing fails more often than the pill.

Re: Personal Q: Birth Control
What about just using condoms...I always stuck with condoms when I was single...no risk of sexually transmitted diseases either. I felt safer using them for both reasons and I was known to carry them "just in case".

Jes, I am the biggest can't swallow pills person and I was able to get them down. Problem with the pill, however, was that it killed my libido.

My Insurance didn't cover that one and it was EXPENSIVE! That was a mistake on my part to just take the prescription with out checking the details.

Re: Personal Q: Birth Control
I have Mirena since the birth of my second child. Prior to my pregnancies, I was always on the pill.
I've had no side effects from Mirena. What questions do you have specifically about it? Feel free to FM if yu want.

Re: Personal Q: Birth Control
There are other implantable devices that are not hormone based, and do not have a restriction if you have a child or not.
Definitely talk to your dr about ALL available methods and take it from there. I cannot do the hormones b/c of the strong family history, but my Dr an I talked about an implanted contraceptive before I had G. I am considering mirena after this PG.
FM if you want me to ask my Dr any questions. I see her Monday and a second opinion never hurts

I was on BC when single and still used condoms... Lots of people want to use more than one method of BC. I don't think being on the pill means someone won't use condoms.
