Pet Grooming (1st time doing this)

I'm bringing my lab for the first time to a pet grooming salon. I went there first to check out the place and to see how much it will be.

For $45 she will be brushed to get loose hair out, washed, ears cleaned and nails clipped.

Is that a good price? And, I noticed a tip jar there so I guess tipping is in order? I figure 20% so $5???

Gizmo's grooming is $35 but he is a small dog. We always give a tip. About $5-10.

Re: Pet Grooming (1st time doing this)

I pay $40 for my 15 lb dog, he gets a bath, cut, nails clipped, ears cleaned, etc. It is a family owned shop, and I have never tipped.

It sounds a little high to me...she's not getting cut. I used to pay $20 to get my dobie groomed about 8 years ago, so maybe it's gone up.

Re: Pet Grooming (1st time doing this)

I don't remember her saying anything about a cut. Just a lot of brushing. I mentioned shaving only because my friend took her dook to a salon and they shaved the dog. She chuckled at that and said no,no we don't shave labs.

I dropped her off about a 1/2 hour ago so we'll see what she looks like.

I learned that the woman rents the space out of a Pet Supplies store.

Re: Pet Grooming (1st time doing this)

We have a maltipoo and have been to about 5 different groomers over the last two years...average price is about $45-50 and I usually give $5-10 tip. That is for bath, nails, ears and haircut. One thing about the drop off places is that it takes them forever - like I'd bring her in at 9:00 and they wouldn't call me until 12 or 1 - and I know it doesn't take more than 45 minutes or so. So that means she was sitting in a cage for like 3 hours... we just started using a mobile grooming service (the guy comes with a van and he just needs a hose hookup). We pay $55 I think but it's worth it IMO to not have her sitting at a groomers all day.

Re: Pet Grooming (1st time doing this)

If that includes a cut, the price is great. We have a mobile groomer that comes to our house bi-monthly, and it's about that price per dog with a cut (but they're much smaller - Yorkies).

We always tip no less than 10.00 per dog. She's handling my babies! I'd rather tip higher knowing that she'll take extra-good care of them. I wouldn't want to pizz her off and undertip. JMO.

Re: Pet Grooming (1st time doing this)

Well I got her back. She looks cute. Her hair looks short but I didn't ask if it was cut. When I brush her good she looks like that so maybe that's all they did. Her nails are cut, ears cleaned and she smells good.

I didn't know there was tax!! There isn't when I get my hair done soooo weird. It ended up being $50 and I also gave a $5 tip. The tax bit surprised me.

So I'm not sure if that's still the going rate for grooming. I'll shop around and see what everyone else charges.

Re: Pet Grooming (1st time doing this)

glad she looks cute! we take my lab to the groomers for bath/trim nails/clean ears for about $40-45. i was told that if he were smaller, the price might be less for the same thing, but he qualifies as 'large' at 80lbs

Excuse me? Sounds like you have a bit of a chip on your shoulder. How about you back off? I spend my life tipping people and if I don't wish to tip my groomer then that is my prerogative .

Re: Pet Grooming (1st time doing this)

I have to tell you about this place in Centereach on Middle Country Road...it's called Barks and Bubbles. It is a self serve dog washing place. They provide the aprons, the shampoo, conditioner, brushes, combs, towels, dryer and doggie perfume. All you need is your dog. It is awesome. We take our dog there ever 3 weeks or so. She loves it. It is a nice way to bond with your dog and make sure that she is actually clean and not traumatized. The best part is it is less the $ 20. We love it!! Here is the link!!! Have fun!!!
