Pet store rating system
No posts about Legislator Cooper's proposition that was tossed and now the rating system that will be proposed in it's place for pet shops?

Re: Pet store rating system
There is now!
I'm really bummed. I don't think the rating system will have as much of an affect. I think many people go to stores because they want a dog now. Not the kind of situation where they're going to stop and check a rating system, you know?
After educating myself for years on this, it's my opinion that there are no reputable pet stores, and reputable breeders don't sell to pet stores, so all the reviews should be negative. Perhaps that is what he's going for, but I don't know how he plans to prevent the store owners themselves from peppering the system with false glowing reviews.

Re: Pet store rating system
I think it's ridiculous...and I was very surprised to hear that the AKC opposed his original plan of banning stores that purchased puppies from mills. Their argument was that it would affect breeders and I don't see how that's possible. Which now makes me wonder if the AKC maybe does support puppymills (I'm sure they get a lot of $$$ from all those "AKC registered" puppies) albeit in a not so public manner. Will still be getting my next dog from a rescue - just like we got Misty...

Re: Pet store rating system
I was surprised too Gerty. I asked some Lab breeders that I know and they all said pretty much the same thing - AKC isn't as crystal clean as I thought they were. They collect amazing amounts of money for purebreed registrations but that the regulation of breeders to ensure they actually ARE purebred and well cared for is sorely lacking. If they were leaving that up to regulating agencies - ok - but why oppose it other than to protect their cash cows?
From what I've read, AKC is opposing this legislation everywhere, not just NY.

Re: Pet store rating system
The AKC IS about money. I registered my new puppy.
$20 there $15 buck there
I mean I ended up with over $50 and they are STILL tagging me with emails about needed insurance, etc.. you name it!
So no, I would not be surprised if the AKC is not too Kosher.
A few years ago, there was "some" reviews on pet stores. But no official ratings.
I do think it's a step towards more regulated conditions, etc...

Re: Pet store rating system
From what I have heard, the AKC is concerned that it will be a gateway to legislation against legitimate breeders and their practice of choosing the owners for their dogs. I am not sure how legitimate that claim is, but it makes sense on some level, being that it is welcoming legislation to scrutinize the sale of non-livestock animals.
