Picked up our anniversary cake during lunch. Question about travel and the cake.
So I had to go over to Rolling Pin to pick up the free cake they make for the first anniversary. Chocolate cake with canoli filling w/ chocolate chips. I wanted to just eat it all. The question is can we take it on a plane with us? If we have a cooler bag it will be fine. Due to the canoli filling it must remain cold. I was just curious if any other couples took it on the plane with them. Thanks.

We took our wedding cake tier on a plane with us. We froze it first, though. It stayed cold the entire time. I would keep it in the freezer until you leave for the airport, if possible.

Agreed. Freeze it now. Take it out of the freezer when you leave for the airport. It will definitely defrost within a few hours...

FAA regulations only prohibit liquids, so you should be fine from a "what's allowed on board" angle.

OH, I didn't even think of this. No, he won't be okay.
I was bringing home a sealed, 4 ounce jar of Nutella from Italy and I had to toss it.
Sorry Sean.

Re: Picked up our anniversary cake during lunch. Question about travel and the cake.
I would try to call the airlines or look it up online to see if they allow you to take it on the plane.
I would hate for you to bring it to the airport and not be able to take it on the plane.
If you can take it - if you freeze it and take it out before you leave it should be fine.

I know that last time I flew we tried to bring some cheese on board that we purchased and even though it fit in under the 3oz guideline they made us toss it out. I would call the airline because I would hate for them to tell you to toss it.

We were told no food at all on planes that we went on. You had to buy anything on the other side of security. I wouldn't take the chance, or if you really want to, call the airlines.

As long as he's in the US, and prints out the FAA rules, he'll be OK. The FAA doesn't prohibit solid food. If a security person tries to take it, show them the FAA rules. They don't always know the rules they are supposed to be enforcing...
I don't know about rules between countries. I'm sure there are more restrictions.

if he is traveling within the US, he needs to follow the TSA rules. if he is traveling outside the US, he needs to go by TSA and customs regulations.
either way, prepared, solid foods are usually ok. if it's cake and in a cooler as a carry on, he shouldn't have a problem.

The agent I had showed me the US rules. I tried to make the case that it still fit in a small ziplock bag, but he dug out the actual US rules to show me, which say that each particular item has to be under 3 ounces.
I think the issue with Sean's cake is that if he gets a real azz for an agent, they'll say he can't take it. Canoli cream is not a solid.

Re: Picked up our anniversary cake during lunch. Question about travel and the cake.
Sorry everyone. I was so busy at work. We are only going to Florida. I am going to call the airline about it though. I will have to see what they say. Thanks for all the responses. I am just nervous if they make me toss it. I would definately have to throw down with someone.

I guess they could get him on the whipped cream category, and/or the "gel like food substances" category....
You could still check it. If you have a sturdy box or something, and wrap it well, it should survive the trip (maybe not pretty, but still in one piece...)

Re: Picked up our anniversary cake during lunch. Question about travel and the cake.
Each individual airline has rules on top of the FAA regulations, and they have every right to enforce them as long as they also enforce the FAA regulations.

Re: Picked up our anniversary cake during lunch. Question about travel and the cake.
I had to do this last month- 4 cheesecakes to Florida. I called TSA- it is up to the screener. I got a semi soft cooler from kmart. I froze the cakes and put in bags of ice. If they told me i had to toss the ice i was ok with that. it was small enough to fit under the seat but sturdy enough to go under the plane if needed. i flew out of Macarthur.
ETA: This is the cooler

You're only allowed one quart-sized bag, so you'd have to give one piece to each passenger on the plane, and tell them not to eat it because you need it back when you land...
