OMG how scary!! I'm glad he got out ok!!! My brother has an explorer and I'm not sure what year it is but it's sitting in my parents driveway b/c they're all away in FL. I have to drop it off to the ford dealer early next week to get the cat. converter fixed--- I'll def. plan to ask them about any recalls for his model/year. Thanks for the info- and glad again that he's ok!!!

Well the story goes...
He was driving to get the baby and his dashboard lights went out. He pulled over because he thought maybe the fuse blew and he was going to replace it really quick. When he put the car in park, smoke started billowing over the dashboard. My husband was a firefighter for about 10 years and keeps fire extinguishers in the back. (I used to make fun of him for it. Never again!) He ran to the back to get them but by the time he got back to the front (10 secs tops) the carpets were already on fire and the extingushers didnt even touch the flames. Then the airbags exploded and the car went up like a Christmas Tree. There were more explosions and all of the windows were blown out. The cop responding saw the flames over the tree tops from 5 miles away. There was a nearby Parks Police Patrolman and he described it to me as a scene from a movie.
Thank you for all of your kind words and FM's. I agree, I have a whole lot to be thankful for this year!

OMG! How awful! Thank God your DH and DC are OK. Good God, I get a knot in my stomach just thinking about what you have been through.
Thnak you for posting this, we have a 1999 Explorer and are not the original owners either so hadn't heard of it, ours has the same recall. I just showed my DH your post.
I'm just glad your family is OK.

That is so scary!! My DH has a 2001 Ford Explorer, and got that notice a few months ago. He told me alot of places have run out of the replacement part. After seeing these pics, I'm forcing him to go get it fixed.
