Pictures from our trip to Ireland!
We arrived at Shannon airport on Sunday, April 27th and departed Dublin on Friday, May 9th, so we had almost 2 weeks in Ireland.
Our first stop was Doolin, a tiny town on the northwest coast. Loved it! Beautiful countryside and DH and I would wake up to the cows mooing. We did the Cliffs of Moher cruise, Inishere (one of the Aran islands) and then went to the Cliffs of Moher visitor center. The view from up there is amazing:
Taken from the boat:
Inishere - LOVED it! DH and I rented mountain bikes and rode all over the island. I wish we'd had more time there, but we had to get back to catch the ferry. These stone walls are all over Inishere. You can see DH riding his bike through the maze of walls:
We rode all the way out to this lighthouse:
Kitty was getting shelter from the rain:
Next we went to the Dingle Peninsula, via a car ferry across the Shannon River. We stayed 3 days in Dingle but I wish we'd only stayed for 2. Not much to do there other than drive Slea Head and walk around town. It's probably much better in the warmer months when you can walk by the water and not freeze!
The water was so green!
We saw this type of sign a number of times. The roads along the coast have a lot of hairpin turns and can go down to only one lane. Not to mention you're driving along a cliff and the only thing keeping you from going over is a little stone wall about 3 feet high
You can't tell from this picture, but this road was about 1/4 mile long and only big enough for one car to pass through:
This is the same road:
There are sheep and cows everywhere!
Dingle at sunset:
Next we went to Killarney. It rained both days that we were there and the visibility was bad, so we didn't get to drive the Ring of Kerry. We went to Muckross House and also the farms too. That was fun, even in the rain (thank goodness we had rain coats!)
Ok, I'm starving to death right now so I'll post some more pictures in a little bit

Re: Pictures from our trip to Ireland!
I'm typing and eating now....
Irish wolfhounds. Very sweet dogs but very smelly!
Oh, oops, let me back up a second. My pictures are out of order. This is St. Brigid's well, in Doolin. You can see in the background there's an arched doorway in the white stone wall. That is a tunnel.....
In the tunnel it looks like this: TONS of mementos, letters, pictures, candles.... people leave things for their departed loved ones and throw money in the well:
On a lighter note , this made me laugh:
We kept seeing this sign, which we think might mean "watch out for children playing". My friend Gabrielle thinks it means "watch out for cars splashing through puddles"
We had to yield to cows in the road:

Re: Pictures from our trip to Ireland!
After Killarney we headed to Cork. On the way to Cork we stopped in Cahir to see Cahir castle. Very cool little castle! It has some furnishings in it, unlike a lot of the castles, so you can get a better idea of what it might have looked like back then. There are all these little rooms to explore, and winding stone staircases to climb.
A creepy narrow stairway that I was too chicken to climb:
So I made DH do it
Here's what was at the top. It looked like a small prison cell:
Another creepy stairway:
Next we stopped in Cashel to see the Rock of Cashel. The Rock of Cashel is actually the ruins of and old church where it was said St. Patrick stopped and baptized the King:
One more stop, Blarney Castle. We almost didn't go because a bunch of people had said not to bother. We're glad we went though, because we thought it was fun! It's a cool castle, really big (bigger than Cahir) and lots of exploring to do. I imagine it wouldn't be fun to go there during prime tourist season when it's mad crowded, but it wasn't crowded when we went.
Ew!
And yes, we kissed the Blarney Stone! I didn't realize that when you get to the top, you're on line to kiss the stone. I really didn't want to kiss that germy thing, but the guy behind me talked me into it (plus, when I got up there I saw a bottle of antibacterial spray ) You have to lay on your back and do a backbend and then scoot way down to kiss the stone. It's a little scary! I have a picture but I haven't scanned it yet.
After that, we checked into our B&B in Cork. Unfortunately it was the day before a bank holiday so all the shops were closed. We took a drive down to Kinsale, a little port town, and walked around a bit. Then we headed back to Cork, had dinner, and walked around. It's a cool city, and I wish we'd had more time there (we only stayed one night). Great nightlife too. We passed a bar called Long Island I so wanted to go in but it was packed.
The next day we drove to Kilkenny. I don't have any pictures. We did the tour of the castle but you're not allowed to take pictures (it's fully furnished, with lots of antiques and portraits). Not much to do in Kilkenny, but it was still nice. The best meal we had was there. We had dinner at a fab Italian restaurant. Everything was amazing, right down to the limoncello and the best coffee I've ever had in my life. We also went horseback riding in Kilkenny which was a lot of fun. Just not feasible tyring to take pictures when you're cantering!
Finally, we ended our stay in Dublin. We did 2 days which was just enough. A little tip - do the hop-on/hop-off bus. You pay for a ticket that allows you to get on and off a guided tour bus in a 24 hour period. It hits all the big tourist spots in Dublin.
Here's the River Liffey:
St. Patrick's cathedral:
Temple Bar area:
The B&B we stayed at was built in the 1700's:
And oh yes, can't forget Mr. Guinness!
Pouring my own pint:
In the Gravity Bar (at the top of the Guinness factory):
And there you have it! We loved the people in Ireland. Everyone was soooo nice (except for the wench at the rental car place ) Gorgeous, gorgeous country. I took over 400+ pictures but I think I would crash LIF if I tried to post them all
Let me know if any of you have any questions! And thanks to donegal419 and peabody for your help and suggestions!
