Pig Roast???
So DH's 30th birthday is this summer and he wants a pig roast, I am trying to surprise him with one but all the companies I have called are really expensive, close to $1000 or more. Any suggestions???

Re: Pig Roast???
What are you looking for pricing on.. just the pig? Or someone to set up and cook it for you?
The pig alone (gutted, etc.) is about 200-250 (around 100lbs) - so I suspect the rest of the cost is cooking, set up, prep and whatever. My friends cook it themselves - have you considered that?

Re: Pig Roast???
Well I would cook it myself but I don't have a spit and I would not have a clue how to do it. So I would like someone to cook it but I don't need all the sides and other stuff that goes along with it cause I could make all that myself, but it seems that they all come with sides.

Re: Pig Roast???
My friend doesn't use a spit.. they have a pig roast every year so they built a big bbq pit in the far corner of the back yard. It's made with bricks and racks and they use a ton of coal. And it can be broken down after the party.
If that's not an option... because it IS hard work and probably would ruin the surprise.. I'd negotiate with the companies. Tell them that ALL you want is for them to set up, cook and break down. Tell them you do not want sides or napkins or whatever and that you will provide those things. Find out what the cost would be then.
My friend makes it into a big 'potluck' type thing. She invites tons of people and everyone brings their favorite beverage or a dish. It's fantastic and a lot of fun! AND it defrays some of the cost.
Good Luck!

Re: Pig Roast???
My family is Cuban and from Miami so I have quite a bit of experience on this topic
You can definitely do it yourself. Buy some cinder blocks and set them up in rectangle about 4 feet high. Put sand at the bottom and then charcoal. Sandwich the pig between 2 grates (chicken wire can work) (you may want to elevate the pig about 1 foot above the fire). Cover it with plywood and voila!
Of course, my family has a custom built one (like any self-respecting Cuban) but I have seen this work before.

Re: Pig Roast???
Anytime we cater we use Division Ave Caterers . My cousin had a pig roast party. I'm not sure about the pricing but I know people were going nuts over it. I saw this on their menu page. I didn't see how much it was for the pig alone though give them a call.
Division Ave. Pig Roast Smoked Pig, Pulled Texas Pork, Coconut Shrimp Kabobs, Hawaiian Chicken, Fresh All Beef Burgers, Hebrew National Hot Dogs, Mixed Green Salad, Rice Pilaf, Choice of 3 Salads, Fresh Watermelon and Cookies and Brownies $25.95 Per Pers

YES! My girlfriend does a 'cuban style' pig - which is why they don't use a spit. They have this giant bucket of 'basting sauce' that they continually put over the pig and I am 90% sure her dad said it is a Cuban recipe!

Thanks so much! I just called them. I also emailed All american royal caterers since they are a vendor on here and fm'd me. So we will see who has better pricing.
